“No, that sounds perfect. Thank you.” Mia slid into her seat and began pouring us a glass. We sat sipping on our champagne in silence.

The driver had put some soft music on, as if he knew we needed it, but it was only making me feel more sad. Mia was the first to snap out of it.

“I’m not going to have our night be sad. I loved Mom and Dad and miss them greatly, but we’re here together now, and you’re leaving me soon, so cheer up!” Mia tapped her champagne glass to mine.

“Where are we going for dinner?” I finished off my champagne. “I’m starving. Feed me.”

“I wanted to take you to a nice steakhouse, but I know you love Italian, so we’re going to Little Italy, then to the Upper West Side for dancing,” Mia said. “The most popular dance club in the city is there, so maybe we’ll find you a man and then you won’t leave me.”

Mia’s driver dropped us at the front door of her favorite Italian restaurant. She’d called ahead and reserved her favorite table by the front window for people-watching.

“It smells so good. I can’t wait.” I sniffed the air. “I may have needed to wear a stretchy dress.”

We talked and laughed about anything and everything and then some.

“Have you thought about going back to school to finish your degree?” I asked Mia. “I know you don’t need the money, but the bigger question is, do you want a career?”

“I don’t know what I want anymore, but I have time to figure it out,” Mia shrugged. “What are you going to do for work when you return to Australia?”

“I can probably go back to my job at the zoo,” I lied. I knew the job was filled already. “I’ll be fine as long as Sophie is fine.”

Mia’s cell chimed in with a text that her driver was there to pick us up. Mia had told her driver to make sure they left the restaurant by nine. She knew full well we could sit there and talk all night, but she wanted to make sure I had a fun night out dancing.

“Time to go, little sis. We didn’t spend all day shopping for these outfits just to sit here eating,” Mia said, already standing and pulling me to my feet.

Chapter 65

Trey

Ilaid my head back in my limo, taking a few deep breaths. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with Natalie and all her attitude tonight, but in the name of charity I’d made a promise I had to keep. Natalie was in front of her penthouse when my limo pulled up to get her.

“Natalie, nice to see you. Are you ready for our date?” I asked, standing outside the car door.

“Trey, you’re prompt as always. I hope you’re ready. I have a fun night planned for us.” Natalie almost purred. “Dinner first, I’m starving.”

“You’re starving? Since when? You never eat,” I snapped back at her.

“Are you going to be like this all night?” Natalie stared at me.

“Sorry, that wasn’t necessary. Let’s just enjoy the evening.” I took her extended hand and helped her in the limo.

“Really, Trey, it’s been quite a long time since we dated. I’ve changed.” Natalie scooted closer to me on the bench seat.

“Natalie, this is a charity date and that’s all,” I told her. “Don’t get your hopes up.”

“Such a grouchy thing you are, what happened to the fun Trey Hawthorne?” Natalie groaned.

“I got tired of the charade, is what happened,” I mumbled.

We arrived at the restaurant and I wasn’t in the least bit surprised to see paparazzi everywhere. Natalie was up to her old tricks.

“So much for you changing, ha, Natalie.” I exited the limo and turned to help her out.

“I had nothing to do with this, Trey. Maybe the actors in that movie being filmed in town are here tonight?” She put her hand out for me to help her.

“Yeah, and you know this why?” I walked away but called back to her. “We just happen to be at the same place they would be on the same night?”

She stepped out of the limo, already waving to the cameras and stopping to comment to a few of them, but I kept walking.
