“He just ran ahead to get the door, he’s a gentleman like that, but we’ll be out together after dinner,” I heard Natalie say as I stopped to hold the door for her.

“Why, thank you, Trey.” She glared at me but kept smiling.

I was still holding the door when, through the flashing lights I saw two bodies approaching the door and I waited. I held my hand up to block my eyes just in time to catch one of the bodies from falling.

Chapter 66

Chloe

We arrived at the club, a little surprised to see paparazzi lining the sidewalk.

“Cool, maybe someone famous is here.” I sat forward in my seat to get a better look out the window. “I saw on the news that some new action adventure movie is being filmed in town this week and causing traffic back-ups.”

“Yeah, I heard about that too. I hope there isn’t going to be too much chaos inside,” Mia said, twisting her hair between her fingers. “Well, let’s go ahead inside. If it’s crazy, we can leave and go to another club.”

Her driver dropped us at the front door after we sat in the limo line for ten minutes.

“That’s Trey and his auction date up ahead getting out of his limo,” Mia said.

I’d been fixing my lipstick and didn’t see him, thankfully. “All right, let’s go dance, but first I need a mojito.” I stepped out of the limo and followed Mia up the few steps to enter the club.

The lights and flashing from the cameras were so annoying that I put my hand up to block them instead of watching where I was walking.

“This is so annoying, how blinding the lights are,” Mia called back to me.

I saw Trey briefly after I turned from the lights, and by “briefly” I meant when I literally ran into him just outside the doors. I was pretty sure the cameras caught the stumble.

He was as good-looking as always, and my heart skipped a beat at his touch. I hadn’t seen him in a few days. I’d been trying to distance myself to make it easier for leaving, but now in his arms, I was sure it hadn’t gotten any easier yet.

“Chloe…” Trey stood at my side, putting one hand on my back and the other on my arm, “…hey, are you okay?”

“Excuse me, blondie. Do you mind getting out of my date’s arms?” Auction Girl sneered, coming around from behind Trey. “It’s you. Weren’t you at the charity auction taking up all of Trey’s time?”

Trey’s mouth quirked a little. He held on to me until I was steady on my feet. When I looked up, I saw the silly smirk on his face, then he crossed his eyes at me, and I couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped me.

Auction Girl’s gaze narrowed, and her hands went to her hips. “Is this funny to you?”

Trey rolled his eyes.

“Oh, sorry. No, not really,” I said. “Well, yeah. Actually, it was pretty funny. I almost fell down these steps in a dress. Now that would have been funny.”

“Well, tell that to the paparazzi, because tomorrow’s tabloids are gonna have a picture of you in his arms,” Auction Girl barked back at me. “Trey, let’s go inside. It’s my night to spend with you. Now I have to figure out how to explain her.”

I grabbed his arm when he turned to follow Auction Girl. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were such a celebrity. I hope this little stumble of mine hasn’t messed up your date.”

“They aren’t interested in me. Not really. They just want to know who I’m out with, and she’s a tabloid hog.” Trey pointed to Auction Girl, who was staring us both down.

“See you inside,” I said.

“I had no idea they would be here tonight,” Mia apologized. “We can just get out of here and away from this craziness.”

“Nah, it’s fine. I’ve been looking forward to coming here.” I linked arms with her. “Besides, there might be a show to watch here tonight.”

“I believe in fate, as you know Chloe, so why not see where this could go?” Mia steered us to the downstairs, quieter side of the club.

From my vantage point in the booth I shared with Mia near the back of the club, I watched as Auction Girl clung to Trey, kissing his neck and trying to kiss his lips. I could definitely understand why Trey had previously had a relationship with her. Auction Girl was beautiful with her perfectly styled hair and toned figure. There was no competing with a woman who looked like that.

“Finish your drink so we can go upstairs to dance,” Mia said. “I love the song they’re playing up there. Come on, down the hatch, let’s go.”
