“I thought we were going to visit first and have dessert maybe.” I pulled her back to the table. “I want dessert before sweating and more alcohol.”

Chapter 67

Trey

The waitress took our drink orders and we were awkwardly left in silence. I could hear the music playing upstairs.

I wonder if the girls are upstairs dancing.

“Trey, stop pouting and talk to me,” Natalie said from across the table. “I wanna hear what you’ve been up to.”

“Natalie, I’ll sit here and have a conversation with you and we can have fun tonight, but we will not be getting back together.” I looked her right in the eyes. “I need you to understand that before this goes any further.”

“We were good together, Trey,” Natalie said. “Forget about all the nonsense that happened back then and remember how good it was.”

“Natalie, it was whatever it was back then and that’s all,” I said sternly. “Tell me you’re hearing me or I’m leaving now.”

“Fine, fine relax. Have your drink.” Natalie waved over the waitress. “Bring us a bottle of your best wine.”

“Your drinks are coming out now, ma’am. Do you also want the bottle, or cancel the first drinks?” the waitress asked.

“Did I tell you to cancel anything?” Natalie barked at the waitress.

The waitress looked to me with a frown. Sorry, Mr. Hawthorne,” the waitress apologized.

“No need to apologize, right Natalie?” I urged her to be polite.

“Just bring the drinks and the bottle.” Natalie still barked, then saw my face. “And thank you, that will be all.”

“I’m not drinking tonight, Natalie, but you go ahead and enjoy the wine.” I flipped my wine glass upside down. “Why don’t you tell me what you’ve been doing with yourself while we wait for the hors d’oeuvres.”

The longest hour of my life slowly ticked by watching Natalie drink most of the bottle and pick at her caviar, all the while listening to her go on about one person or another. She never had anything good to say about anyone.

How did I ever date this woman?

“If you’re done eating, why don’t we go upstairs and dance?” I asked, using my best smile. “You’re a great dancer, after all.”

“Such flattery will get you everywhere, Trey.” Natalie stood and pulled me by my tie. “I do love to dance.”

We hit the dance floor immediately. Natalie was wild on the dance floor, as usual, wanting and expecting attention from every man around her. It gave me the freedom to scan the room to find Mia and Chloe.

“I’m gonna go grab a water,” I yelled to Natalie, who wasn’t looking my way, much less listening to me.

Ah, there they are.

“Do you mind if I cut in?” I asked, not waiting on an answer. “Hi, I only have a minute. Hope you’re having fun.”

“What are you doing? She’s going to cause a scene.” Chloe laughed as I spun her around.

“Oh boy, I told you, here comes Natalie,” I groaned. “That wasn’t even a full minute.”

“Trey, baby, come on, I miss you,” Natalie purred, and pulled me by the sleeve. “Bye now.”

I looked across the floor to find Mia had her eyes on me and continued to throughout the evening. So, she knew I had my eyes on Chloe throughout the evening.

I’m in trouble, Mia’s on to me.

I watched Chloe return to their table to find Mia not there. She sank down into a chair and pulled her hair up off her face, as if to cool off.
