Natalie is busy posing for pictures and Chloe is alone. Here’s my chance.

“You okay?” I asked when I walked up to their table.

She nodded. “I’m fine. How did you get away this time?”

“Natalie loves to be photographed, so I probably have five minutes.” I lowered myself onto a chair next to her. “Is the music the same in the clubs back home?”

“Yes and no. I mean, we have similar stuff and yet I know a lot of this too.” Chloe chuckled at herself. “That wasn’t a very good answer, sorry.”

“Actually, I thought it was.” I smiled at her. “You want to dance some more. With me?”

“I’m afraid of getting beat up or stabbed,” Chloe laughed. “She is down-right scary and here she comes, by the way.”

“Natalie, why don’t you sit down and meet Parker’s wife, Mia, and her sister Chloe.” I stood and pulled a chair out for her. “This is the sister, Chloe.”

“Who’s Mia, then?” Natalie refused to sit.

“I’m Mia Hawthorne.” Mia put her hand out to Chloe. “And I think you’re the one who had the highest bid at the auction for Trey.”

“Yes, but we used to date a few months ago, too.” Natalie didn’t accept the handshake, she just crossed her arms. “Trey, I didn’t come here to socialize with your family. Let’s go dance.”

“I’ll see you out there, girls.” I turned to follow Natalie but turned back when she was out of ear shot. “Meet me in fifteen minutes on the far side of the dance floor.”

“Get out of here, Trey. That miserable woman owns you, for tonight anyway.” Mia waved him off.

“Only two more hours, thank God.” I looked at my watch and winked at them. “Fifteen minutes, both of you.”

“You okay?” Mia asked fifteen minutes later, dancing in the designated spot.

The girls didn’t see me sneak up behind them. I heard Mia ask Chloe if she was okay, so I waited for her answer. I wanted to hear what she had to say.

“I’m fine.”

“I’m not buying it. I know you better than any person on the planet.” Mia moved closer to Chloe, giving her a once-over. “Something isn’t right. You look flushed. Are you hot?”

“Yeah, I think I had too much to drink. I don’t really feel well,” Chloe said, sending glances in my direction, but not seeing me behind her. “I feel a little hot.”

“Hot for whom?”

Chloe jumped, then turned to face me when I had come up behind her. “No one.”

“Right,” My mouthed quirked. “I agree you’re hot.”

“I – Ah, thanks,” Chloe said. “But I was saying I felt hot, as in not feeling good.”

I reached a hand to her forehead. I was sure she had a fever just by the flushed face and glazed eyes, because she didn’t seem drunk.

“I think you have a fever. When are you heading out of here? I could use a ride home, and you need to go home.”

“I want to dance more. I never get to at home.” Chloe danced around Mia. “Come on you guys.”

We danced all around each other. Chloe was laughing and having a good time. The music turned to a slow dance.

“May I?” I put my hand out to Chloe. “Mia, do you mind?”

“Not at all. Why don’t I be your look-out for the she-devil.” Mia laughed. “By the way, where would I find your date right now?”

“She got a phone call and went outside. I’m sure she’ll be looking for me by now.” I took Chloe into my arms. “Thanks for meeting me over here. I can only take so much of Natalie.”
