“She’s not a witch. You watch too many movies, dude. She just pays attention. You know, she takes notice of the things guys don’t.”

“Do you swim out here a lot at night?” Asher waded in the water.

“No, this is the first time,” I said. “You don’t either, I guess, or you wouldn’t have asked me. Why are you out here?”

“I came out here to swim with you and apologize. If you wanna have girl talk, I’m gonna need a drink first.” Asher swam to the deep end. “First, a few laps.”

Chapter 89

Jade

The next morning, everyone was all smiles, including Tina. I was happy to see her smiling because she was one of the girls that I thought would be good for Sawyer. I couldn’t figure out what had happened to change her. It occurred to me that she could have been pretending all this time.

I think today will tell us a lot. I wonder what Victoria thinks of Tina’s tantrum?

“I see everyone is here and looking excited for today.” Victoria entered the patio. “I see my ride is also here.”

“You’re leaving, Mom?” Asher stood from the table. “At least have some of this buffet with us.”

“A buffet? Isn’t that fancy, just for breakfast? Marcus must be in a good mood.” Victoria looked inside the chafing trays. “I think I will join you. Josh, please go out to the plane and have Gunner come in to eat.”

“Aunt Victoria, I was hoping you might join us on the expedition today.” Sawyer pulled a chair out for her to sit between himself and Asher. “You could wear fatigues and put that black stuff under your eyes.”

“Oh, stop that. You know I would never wear that black stuff under my eyes.” Victoria grinned. “Now, the fatigues I might like. Save me a pair.”

“You missed snorkeling yesterday and I know you like doing that,” Asher said. “You need to stop working so much and relax.”

“You need to stop relaxing so much and work, but that’s a discussion for another time.” Victoria rubbed his back and smiled. “Now, tell me how it went yesterday. Did you see anything good?”

“We saw some baby sharks and a small coral reef.” Nadia spoke up. “I was hoping some dolphins would come visit us, but we probably need to go deeper.”

“When are we going diving farther out?” Sarah buttered her toast. “That’s where you’ll encounter dolphins.”

“There’s a lot of sharks out farther. I wouldn’t want to dive with them.” Gunner took a seat at the table with a plate of food. “I’ve been in a lot of different water, but that’s more shark than I want to tangle with.”

“These waters are well-known for their sharks. Jade, you take dive tours out. What do you think?” Sawyer broke my thinking bubble. “Do you get scared out there?”

“I do. I have a healthy respect for sharks, but you can also dive with them as long as you do it smart,” I said. “I agree with Gunner. I don’t go too far out. That’s their domain.”

“Tina, what about you? Did you enjoy the snorkeling?” Victoria asked.

She knows. Why would I think otherwise?

“It was fun, but then something bit me, so I had to come back to the house.” Tina looked at her plate of food. “I think I just needed to rest.”

“Well, dear, I hope today is a fun day for you.” Victoria glanced at Sawyer. “Asher, walk me out.”

“I guess that’s my exit, too.” Gunner put his napkin down and stood. “I’ll be back in thirty minutes with the guys. We’re gonna want to get started soon. You want to get across the island before dark.”

“Oh my God, what is he talking about? This is all day?” Tina gasped. “What time will we be back here?”

“I’m glad you asked. As soon as we’re done with breakfast, you will all need to go to your suites with your crew member and get packed up,” Sawyer said. “We will not be coming back here.”

“For how long?” Nadia crossed her arms. “Where will we be going?”

“Girls, let him finish, then ask questions.” I scoffed at their insistence. “Go ahead, Sawyer.”

“Thanks, Jade. We will be camping on the other side of the island and then going out on the ocean for a few days in my yacht.” Sawyer paused for questions. “I want you to see that part of my life too.”
