“Thanks, but I don’t see her. What are you talking about? Is she here?” I looked all round.

“Dude, she’s coming right at us in the purple dress.” Asher waved to her. “Hello, Gorgeous. I knew you’d clean up like this, but you didn’t need to.”

“Asher you’re such a flirt. Hey, Sawyer.” She stood in front of me.

“Jade, Asher wasn’t exaggerating. You are gorgeous. That color goes with your tan skin so perfectly.” I stuttered a little. “Would you like to dance?”

“Yeah, I’d love to, but what about Sarah?”

“What about her? She doesn’t care about me.” I took Jade in my arms and spun us around the dance floor. “She cares about the cameras and the attention and the money. She’s not my girl.”

“If you knew that why did you let her do all of this today and come here tonight?” Jade asked. “Does she know you aren’t picking her?”

“Not at all, and I let her do all of this today, as you put it, because she’s been a good sport and she was very much looking forward to an event like this.” I looked into Jade’s eyes. “Why take that away from her?”

“You’re a very nice man, Sawyer Hawthorne, even if you do go around pushing people in the water.” She teased. “So what are you going to do now?”

“Do about what?” I danced us across the room further from the cameras. “I’m going to dance with the prettiest girl in the room all night long.”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.” Jade looked away. “She’s going to come looking for you and want an answer.”

“And when the night is over I ‘ll give her one. Which will be thank you but I choose someone else.”

“Do I know this someone else?” Jade whispered in my ear.

“Jade, you know it’s been you this whole time.” I whispered back. “What do you think?”

“Sawyer, where’s Kellan?” Asher came up to me in a rush. “Poppy just went into labor.”

“He’s not here yet. He messaged me a minute ago. Get her to the limo.” I turned, still holding Jade’s hand. “I have to go. What do you want to do?”

“I’m going with you. Was there any doubt about that?” Jade looked confused. “Should I go tell Sarah?”

“No, let her have her night. Maybe she’ll meet her prince charming here.”

We whisked Poppy away in the limo. Kellan met us at the hospital, then disappeared into the room with Poppy. One by one the Hawthorne family crowded into the family waiting room. Until the last person ran in the door. He looked around smiling, then spotted me.

“That must be your brother.” Jade said sitting next to me, surrounded by Hawthornes. “He looks a lot like you.”

Cota came over to me. “Looks like we’re about to be uncles?”

“Looks like it. The first Hawthorne baby of many to come I think.” I said. “Why don’t you sit down.”

Cota looked around, saying hi to the family, then turned to Jade. “Everyone else here is family. Who might you be?”

The room went quiet. I held my breath, afraid of her answer. Then she took my hand.

“Hi, I’m Jade. His fiancée.”
