“I think we’ve started a battle here, Charlie,” I smiled. “I’ll make you all some cookies. Will that solve this?”

“Can we request what kind we want?” Lou crinkled up his face. “I really like sugar cookies.”

“You are in luck because that’s Dad’s favorite as well, and I was going to make him some right now.” I looked to Robert and Gunner. “What about you two?”

“If it’s no trouble, I love oatmeal,” Robert said. “You want some help? I can help.”

“Yes, you can help. I’d love the company.” I looked at my cell for the time. “I need to get going on the additional cookies. Victoria, are we done?”

“Yes, dear. I’ll let you know what day and time we need you.” Victoria gave me the shhh look. “It’ll be at least a week, so you have time to prepare.”

“What are you two planning?” Sawyer asked. “It sounds rather secretive.”

“I asked Jade if she could handle coming to the island and doing the diving and snorkeling with your guests coming in.” Victoria told the truth without telling it all. “You don’t mind if Jade comes, do you?”

“Not at all. I had the same idea last night. I was going to ask about a fishing run, too.” Sawyer turned to me, waiting for an answer.

“You’re asking me. Sorry, I was thinking about something else. Yes, sure, just give me a list of what you need and I’ll set it up,” I answered, wondering how much I was supposed to know right now.

I’m gonna have to ask Victoria about this. It’s his island, he should know what’s happening over there, unless people with money just don’t pay attention to the details. Change the subject.

“So, some good news. Dad is not going to a VA hospital.” I squinted from the sun, looking up at the four men. “An opportunity to send him to the best in the States came available, so he’s going soon.”

“When is soon?” Robert looked around at the dock. “I mean, we just got here and, on a side note, this dock is in bad shape.”

“I know, that’s going to get fixed too.” I looked over to Sawyer and Victoria to see if there was any recognition about it.

Nothing. This is a little weird.

“I need to talk to you all privately.” I turned back to the four men.

“You trying to steal my tough guys?” Sawyer joked. “I wouldn’t, these guys can eat a lot.”

“Just so happens I like to cook. How about you come to the hospital with me, then join me here for dinner?” I looked to each serious face. “What?”

“You wanna cook for us?” Lou asked. “Do you cook better than the Admiral?”

“Oh God, yes. I know he thinks he can cook, but I know better.” I laughed along with them. “What do ya say?”

“I think if your dad is leaving, you might wanna stay with him tonight. We’ll be around for a while, we can join for dinner another night,” Gunner smiled. “We’ll come see you at the hospital early evening. Will that work?”

“We still want cookies, though,” Charlie added. “My stash is almost gone.”

“Sounds like you have some big plans.” Victoria nodded to each man. “I’m going to steal my nephew for a bit, and his plane. How long do you need in town?”

“We’ll be here doing some business, then spend a few hours with Jade.” Gunner looked to Sawyer. “Are you ready to fly it yourself?”

“I don’t know. Am I?”

Chapter 64

Sawyer

“You’re ready, but if you’re not feeling it, I can fly over with you and come back.” Gunner offered. “It’ll only take a few minutes.”

“Aunt Victoria, are you okay with me flying us over to the island?” I looked to her for confirmation. “I don’t mind if he takes us if you don’t feel safe.”

“Sawyer, didn’t you just fly that plane here?” Aunt Victoria asked. “Never mind answering, I saw you flying and, if Mr. Bond says you’re ready, then let’s go.”
