“We’re right here. You should let Robert help. He can draw like that, too.” Lou pulled out a chair, then pushed it back in. “I smell. I’m going to get a hot shower and see if I can soothe these sore muscles.”

“Hey Lou, push number four on the bedroom intercom. My masseuse will soothe those muscles,” I said without looking at him. “Just tell her what time you want.”

“You have a massage person here on a private island at the push of a button?” Charlie asked. “Why didn’t you say so before now? I’m going to get a massage. See you boys later.”

“No, I’m getting a massage. He told me first.” Lou hurried away to his room. “You can go after.”

“Are those two always after each other like that?”

Chapter 71

Jade

The facility Mrs. Hawthorne set up for my father was like a fancy spa. He had his own suite with plenty of room for Moose to run around. She really had thought of everything. Alison walked me around, explaining how things would go, and I was at peace with this process.

“Dad, it’s time for me to get back on that fancy plane and get back to the marina.” I hugged my dad. “I’m a phone call away and Moosie will be overseeing everything.”

“I don’t know how you did this, Jade, but this is like a vacation. Someday you’re gonna have to tell me how you could afford this.” Dad hugged me tight. “Thank you for not giving up on your old man.”

“Love you, Dad. See you for the holidays.” I wiped at tears running down my cheeks. “Moose, keep an eye on him while you’re here being pampered.”

I waved one last time as Dad’s eyes fluttered closed. Alison motioned for me to follow her out.

“He’s exhausted from the travel, but he’ll be okay. I promise.” Alison handed me her card with her cell number. “Call me anytime. I’m here for both of you.”

A limo was waiting at the entrance to bring me back to the plane. I felt awkward getting in a limo, but no one around seemed to notice or care.

A place this fancy is probably all rich people.

I kicked back in a recliner and closed my eyes, until someone tapped me on the shoulder.

“Good evening, Miss Campbell. Are you ready for something to eat?” a flight attendant I didn’t know existed appeared next to me. “I’ve turned down the bed and laid out some pajamas for you. I’m Cindy.”

“I can just stay here in the chair. You didn’t need to go to the trouble.” I stood from the chair, looking out the window. “How long was I asleep?”

“Only for an hour, but we have a long flight and Mrs. Hawthorne gave instructions to feed you and put you in the bed.” Cindy smiled. “Do you want something cold or hot to eat?”

“Cindy, it’s two in the morning and I’m not very hungry. You must be tired too.” I looked at my cell to confirm the time. “If I promise to go to the bed, will you also lay down and rest?”

“I’m the night stewardess. I’m very used to being awake. You get some rest and I’ll wake you before we land so you can eat and dress.” Cindy continued to smile. “Do you prefer hot or cold breakfast?”

“How long will we be flying?” I yawned. “I can just eat when I get home.”

“It’ll be about six hours. We have to land and refuel. You’ll be home mid-morning.” Cindy still smiled. “Breakfast at around nine-- would that give you enough time to shower and dress?”

These people live a way different life than the rest of us.

I gave her the breakfast order she was determined to get from me and went down the short hall to collapse in the bed. A buzzer woke me five minutes later. I reached around the bed, searching in the dark to make it stop. My hand landed on my cell.

Nine a.m.? No, it can’t be.

“Miss Campbell, your shower is running and breakfast will be ready in fifteen minutes,” Cindy said through an intercom.

“Thank you,” I said into the empty room, not knowing if she could even hear me.

“You’re very welcome,” Cindy answered. “Buzz me when you’re ready for me to do your hair.”

Do my hair? Holy crap.
