We’re either too slutty or too sweet.

Too sexy or a prude.

Ditzy or a bookworm.

But one side of that coin is definitely looked on more favorably than the other, and that’s the side I always tried to stay on.

Until recently.

“Paisley.” Dr. Marshall breezes into the room, closing the door behind him. “It’s good to see you.”

I can’t stop the smile taking over my face. “It’s good to see you too.” I shove the check at him. “I have the money.”

His eyes snap to the closed door as one finger goes to his lips.

I clamp one hand over my mouth, terrified I’ve already fucked this up. “Sorry.” The apology is muffled behind my fingers.

“It’s okay.” He plucks the check away. “I just couldn’t offer everyone the opportunity I gave you, and I wouldn’t want anyone upset that they weren’t included.”

I knew Dr. Marshall believed my mother could get better and this confirms it. “I can’t thank you enough for this—”

“You don’t have to thank me, Paisley.” He glances down at the check, scanning the numbers the bank printed across the safety paper. “Just make sure you get me the rest before Monday.”

“Before Monday?” My heart stutters to a stop. “I thought you said I just had to get it to you before the trial was over.”

“Unfortunately circumstances have changed and I’ll need the full amount before Monday.”

That’s only five more days. Counting today.

Five days to come up with twenty thousand dollars.

I want to cry. I want to scream.

But neither of those will help me at all.

So I do the same thing I’ve done my whole life when the world tries to knock me down. I straighten my shoulders and lock my eyes on Dr. Marshall’s. “I’ll have it on your desk before Monday.”

I don’t know how I’ll make it happen, but I’ll do it somehow.

Because one way or another I’m going to flip my mother’s coin and show the world they put her on the wrong side.

Even if I end up there in the process.

The walk out of the hospital is a blur of self-pity as I mentally grasp at straws.

I could ask Andre for the money, but I know damn well he’d want me to move into his penthouse immediately, since that seems to be his main focus in this plan he’s got.

Not that I really understand what it is or the motives behind it.

And honestly, I don’t care why he’s doing it. All I care about is the money it will bring me.

But I don’t have the luxury of waiting for Andre to decide I’ve earned it.

I need to find a way to get it now.

And there’s only one way I think I can even come close.

I pull out the cell Andre gave me and tap one of the first contacts I entered before pressing the phone to my ear. Vi said she could get me on the schedule to dance next week, but I need that to happen sooner.
