She answers immediately, curiosity in her voice. “Hello?”

“It’s Paisley. I got a new phone.”

“Good. You deserve one.”

“Um.” I bite down the nerves that creep up whenever I talk to the owner of Platinum. I don’t have time to be scared. “I was wondering if maybe there were any stage openings soon.”

“Stage openings? You still want to dance?” She sounds surprised.

“Yeah. I still want to dance.” Want isn’t really the right word, but I go with it. “As soon as possible.”

Vi pauses, and my guts churn.

She’s going to tell me I’m not cut out for dancing.

That I’m not sexy enough.

Not pretty enough.

“I guess it’s your lucky day then because Kennedy called in sick.”

My heart starts to race and I struggle to swallow.

“Your shift starts at eleven.”
