This was a weird start to their first date – and he was going along with it to humor her. Samantha pulled the mirror out of his mouth and sat back, hesitating, before yanking off her gloves.

“I’m sorry,” she muttered, embarrassed. “I’ll sit you up now.”

“Samantha?”

“I’m just nervous and this just puts me at ease…” she uttered, looking away from him and feeling vulnerable. “I mean, we are friends and have been forever, but realizing that this is an actual date is just different. It’s not buddies. It’s a date between a guy and a girl… and…”

“Let’s continue then,” Toby said quietly, reaching for her hand. “Feel free to poke around, floss, or do what you want, because we’ve got all evening and I would rather you enjoy our first date than dread it.”

“You don’t think I’m weird – or that any of this is strange?”

“Never did,” he smiled shyly. “Besides, it’s just you and me – and I won’t tell a soul any details about our first date. Will you?”

“No,” she replied softly, meeting his smile. “It’s no one’s business but our own, right?”

“Exactly.”

Toby smirked, settled back, and laced his fingers together over his chest before closing his eyes. “Enjoy to your heart’s content,” he said, opening his mouth dutifully.

Smiling nervously, Samantha put on another set of gloves, realizing that Toby was willing to do anything to put her at ease, just so they eventually could go on their date… and that was a staggering thought, because her father had done the same for her when she opened her practice.

Her dad had volunteered to be the first patient because he believed in her and wanted to support her. Her dad had a stack of her business cards at Flyboys – and told everyone about his ‘favorite dentist in town’ every chance he got.

Now, Toby was doing the same thing, but in a different manner.

Instead of doing the cleaning, she rinsed his mouth before putting the suction tube in and pressing the pedal on the floor to sit up the chair. His eyes opened as he looked at her curiously.

Samantha yanked off her gloves again and smiled.

“I think perhaps it’s time for that pizza after all…”

As they walked out to the car, it flattered Samantha to see that Toby was acting like a perfect gentleman — doing all the ‘boyfriend’ things that a guy should do…

Opening the car door for her, he slid into the driver’s seat.

In a small town, everyone noticed everything, and she knew that the gossip would be everywhere that little Tobias Saxon was seen going out on a date with her. Sure enough, the hair salon in the strip mall where her dental office was located was closing… and Loretta was walking out to her car, spotting them quickly.

Samantha raised a hand to wave back and sighed.

“Everything okay?” Toby asked immediately.

“Yes.”

“Is Forelli’s Pizza okay with you?”

“Sure,” she said easily, seeing several people looking at them and wishing it wouldn’t be weird or rude to slink down in her seat and hide. Goodness, the gossips would have a field day with seeing the two of them together.

“Sam, if you don’t want to do this… it’s okay,” Toby began quietly as he drove down the road towards the square – and she looked at him in surprise.

“I won’t make you – and I hope you know that.”

“You aren’t making me go on this date,” Samantha replied, looking at him curiously. “Besides, I thought you wanted to go out with me.”

“Is that why you asked?”

“Sorta,” Samantha hesitated, and saw his frown deepen. “I wanted to go out with you, too…” she finished softly as he pulled into the parking lot of the town square, directly across from the pizzeria.
