Chapter 5

Savvy

I wake up and it’s an immediate shit show. I forgot to plug my phone up, so it died. Which means my alarm didn't go off, so I overslept. I jump up out the bed and rush through getting dressed, hurry downstairs to get my car and rush off to my first apartment showing. I get there just in time to tour the apartment and decide nope this ain’t for me, next. Press repeat, five more times. Why did I think this was going to be easy? By the time I finish my last tour I’m starving since I missed breakfast.

On impulse, I text Joshua to see where he is. He responds he is on a job site today and tells me the address. I go by a BBQ restaurant, grab some food and drinks and make my way to the construction site. When I get there, I spot Joshua right away. I just sit in the car looking at him drooling. I’m pitiful, but damn he is wearing the hell out of those jeans, boots, and Gideon Properties tee shirt. He has his hair pulled back in a ponytail and a hard hat on his head.

I step out of the car and begin to walk towards him. One of the guys he’s working with looks up and says something, I am too far away to hear what it is, but it gets Joshua’s attention. He whips his head in my direction and a scowl covers his face. That look makes my steps falter, maybe this was a mistake he does not look happy to see me at all. He begins to stalk towards me, and I get the definite feeling of being prey.

When he finally reaches me, he says, “Hi Savannah. What are you doing here?”

I hold up the bag and drinks and tell him, “I brought you lunch.”

“You didn’t have to do that. Come on, we can eat over here.”

He leads me to a picnic table and begins to unpack the bag. As we eat, I tell him about my horrible experience trying to find a place to live until my house is ready.

“There are a few more places for me to see tomorrow but after today I am not optimistic. Joshua you guys don’t have rentals do you.”

“No, but I may have a solution to your problem if you’re open minded.”

Well, that gets my attention. “Yes.”

“Why don’t you stay at the beach house?”

“Excuse me?”

“The beach house, Savannah.”

“I couldn’t do that Joshua. I wouldn’t feel comfortable.”

“Then pay the company rent like you would anywhere else.”

“There is no way I could afford rent on that house.”

“Savannah, please stop being so stubborn. The house sits empty 95% of the time and you need a place to stay.”

I look at him as we eat our ribs, which are good but not as good as my dad's. He’s not fighting fair. I love that beach house.

“Say yes.”

“Fine, yes.”

We’re finishing up our lunch when Joseph walks over.

“Hey, Savannah.”

“Hey, Seph.”

“That’s new, most people call me some version of Joe.”

“Well, I am known for coming up with unusual nicknames.”

“What’s your nickname for Joshua?”

“I do not have one…. yet.”

Joseph just laughs at his brother's irritation.
