And that’s when I catch it. The shadow of horns jutting from Richie Riches forehead.

He’s a demon! He’s got a demon in him! I just saw the horns.

No. No! How can that be? No one should know about the catastrophe before it happens besides us.

Do you think someone got to the others? Tortured our plans from them?My heart stops in my chest at the mere thought.

It’s doubtful. The Draco ward is impenetrable.

Then why is that demon here?I ask, averting my gaze the moment he feels my stare.

Possibly a coincidence.

Possible, but not likely. All the new personal injury riders I’ve reviewed recently stipulate extra coverage for accidental death, as if they were planning on a big dangerous activity here, yet I don’t anyone setting up something big and dangerous, AND I’m the only one with access to that information at present. This isn’t a coincidence.

Before Rhygel can say otherwise, I head to Michelle, not sure what I’m going to say to get her away from her mark, just knowing I wasn’t letting her stay anywhere near him without me.

I touch the back of her arm and Michelle turns.

But it’s not her face I see.

“Hey, did you want to head over to the jet skis with me?” I ask casually, voice only wobbling the slightest bit.

Hopefully, the demon in her doesn’t know I just clocked him. And I try not to give myself away by staring directly at the shadowy single horn coming out of the center of her forehead.

“Oh, that’s alright. Jess and I were just getting to know each other. Isn’t that right?”

The demon formally known as Jess nods.

“OK,” I say a little too high. “I’ll catch ya later, then.”

“Sure thing,” Michelle-but-not-Michelle says, and even though it goes against every instinct I have, I turn my back to both and walk away.

A million thoughts raced through my head at once.

If Michelle is possessed, then it’s likely she won’t be harmed in the incident.

But the demon may cause just as much harm by collecting souls in her.

How do I get the demon out of Michelle?

Do you still have the necklace that witch gave you?

Not with me.

Then I’m afraid I have nothing to suggest. I don’t know how you kick us out of your head, so I don’t know where to begin with kicking someone out of your friend’s head.

That’s not helpful, Rhygel. I need—

My thought is abruptly ended by another voice in my head.

Hello, beautiful one. I’ll be taking over now.

Panic seizes my chest as the unfamiliar demon in my head snatches control from me and in doing so, pushes Rhygel far, far into the farthest recesses of my mind.

Rhygel? Rhygel!

He’s too far from my consciousness to hear me.
