“Any luck?” Ari asked, as they met up again.

Lia shook her head no.

“What should we do next?” Charles asked.

Damon glanced toward the restaurant. “I’m curious if the police have found anything.”

They headed back toward the park.

“I wonder if they’ve contacted Boone about this,” Ariana said.

“Not like he would care,” Lia quipped.

“But his reaction would tell them a lot.”

“Like that he’s guilty,” Lia said.

Damon put his arm around Ariana. “Which reminds me, we need to tell them about Boone’s threats.”

Ariana groaned. “And give him more reason to threaten us? He lives across the street. He can make our lives miserable.”

“And we can do the same,” Damon said. “If we don’t tell the police, then I’m going to take matters into my own hands — and I can’t guarantee how that’s going to turn out.”

“I’ll join you,” Charles said.

“We don’t need you menfolk defending our honor,” Lia said, rolling her eyes. “We can stand up for ourselves.”

“He confronted Ariana in that parking lot,” Damon snapped.

“And I’m still in one piece,” Ari said.

“You were badly shaken.”

“A little.”

Damon frowned.

“He’s right,” Charles said. “We need to report his threats to you two. I didn’t think much of what he said to you two last night, because he’s Boone. But he needs to know he can’t get away with threatening any of us.”

Ariana exchanged a look with Lia. “What do you think?”

“It’s going to piss him off,” she said. “I say we report him. He might get so flustered, he’ll slip up. Tell us where he’s keeping her.”

“That’s true.”

Ariana’s heart raced as they made their way back to the park. She hated admitting to the police how she’d gotten herself into that situation, but they needed to know what Boone was doing.

She flagged down Detective Rojas and told her the entire story.

The detective took notes while listening, then held Ariana’s gaze. “You need to stay away from him, and let us do our jobs. Unless you’re an officer, don’t act like one. There are plenty of things you can do as her friend.”

“Like what?” Lia asked.

“Get the word out. You’d be surprised how many cases social media has helped with in recent years by reaching someone who knew something that led to us solving a case.”

“No, I’m not surprised,” Ariana said. “That’s why I’ve been posting and re-posting. I know how the algorithms work.”

“Oh,” said the detective. “Well, good. Do you have other ideas?”
