ChapterTwelve

Damon removed the headphones and breathed a sigh of relief. It had been difficult talking about Rita’s disappearance, and he wasn’t sure how much good the podcast would do in finding her. People listened to them from around the world, so most listeners wouldn’t be able to help their friend. But then again, it was impossible to know who could have a crucial detail.

If nothing else, it would show their listeners the importance of their work — teaching personal safety. Not only preventing abductions and attacks but also escaping them.

Hopefully, Rita had listened to some of what he and Ariana had shared before she disappeared. Then, if she was still alive, she stood a chance at finding her own freedom.

“I think we did good,” Ari said. “Are there any parts you want to re-record or fix?”

“No. We should do minimal editing, so we can get the word out there as soon as possible.”

“Perfect. Why don’t you work on that while I give my dad a call? He’ll probably have more ideas. His whole life is about finding missing people.”

“Sounds good.” He gave her a quick kiss, and she left their soundproof studio.

He played back their podcast recording and made a few minor tweaks. It wasn’t perfect, but they’d gotten through it with minimal errors. Then he uploaded the episode and hoped for the best.

Downstairs, Ariana sat on the couch in the living room, tapping on her laptop. The local news was on the TV, but they weren’t talking about Rita.

“Any news?” he asked.

“No. I’m reading the posts on the Find Rita page that Lia and Charles made.”

“Anything useful?” he asked.

“No clues, but people are interested in attending the vigil.”

“Good. That’ll bring even more attention to the case. Do you think the news will cover it?”

“I hope so,” she said. “I’ve already tagged some newscasters in hopes they’ll take the hint. We—”

Ding-dong!

“That must be Lia and Charles.” Damon hurried for the door.

It wasn’t them.

Boone stood there, arms crossed and glowering. “You have some nerve, Jones.”

“Excuse me?” Damon asked.

“Telling that detective I threatened your wife.”

“Because you did.”

“And you told her you think I’m having an affair.”

“You are.”

Boone stared him down. “Just so you know, I can play that game too.”

“What game?”

“I gave her my doorbell cam footage.” Boone’s brows furrowed.

Damon’s stomach knotted. “Of what?”

“What do you think? Of you threatening me.”
