She put her hands on her hips. “Why didn’t you tell me? Especially after being upset with me for going off on my own.”

“You were sleeping, and nothing came of it. Other than Boone exaggerating.”

“Did you say anything threatening?” she asked.

“I told him he needs to leave you and Lia alone, or he’s the one who’ll need to watch his back.”

“So, you threatened him.”

“He needed to be put in his place,” Damon said. “I will not stand for him threatening you two.”

“You don’t need to return an eye for an eye. He’s the one in the wrong. What are we going to do if the police think you were threatening him? He has actual evidence, unless he’s lying. His threats are he-said she-said.”

“He’s the one in the wrong.”

“It won’t look that way to the authorities.”

“What’s done is done,” Damon said. “Let’s just focus on finding Rita. I got the bonus episode uploaded. We should talk to Lia and Charles, and find out what we can do for the vigil. Do we have a time for that?”

“It’s tonight at dusk,” she said, her tone flat.

“Are you mad at me?”

“What do you think?”

“I was only trying to protect you.”

“But I can handle myself.”

“Look where that got you.”

Her eyes narrowed, then she stormed up the stairs.

“Ariana, wait,” he called.

She didn’t.

He hurried after her. “We can’t let him get between us. This is what he wants — for us to argue instead of looking for Rita.”

“You don’t trust me.”

“Of course I do.”

“I need to be alone.”

“Ariana—”

“Don’t follow me.” She raced up the rest of the steps, and a door slammed.

Damon went to their workout room and took out his frustrations on the punching bag.

How was it Boone had been threatening everyone, yet Ariana saw Damon as the bad guy?
