“How far are we from that warehouse?” she asked.

“It’s just up the road a little. It’ll take us all of five minutes to hike there.”

“Let’s do it.”

Stepping into the woods brought back so many memories — the scents of moist dirt, pine trees, and the immediate cover of darkness. It could easily be any other forest she’d been in.

But it wasn’t.

And Rita needed her. That was the only thing that mattered.

“Where’s the warehouse?” she asked.

“This way.” Damon led her through a well-used path.

At least that meant a lot of people had traveled this way. It was safe.

It was a good thing Ari had given up her pre-law studies. She would make the worst cop, scared of every little thing because of something that happened to her at eleven. Not to mention—

“There it is.” Damon pointed between some trees.

It took her a moment to see it through the thick covering. “Are the police still there?”

“I can’t tell.”

“Let’s check.” She marched ahead, not stopping until she reached the edge of the trees. Half a dozen officers wandered around. Part of the grassy field had been blocked off with police tape, and it went to the warehouse and to part of the forest.

“Looks like less than were here on the news report,” Damon said.

“Some of them could be in the woods. What’ll we say if we run into them?”

He patted his backpack. “We’re just a couple of hikers.”

Not that they’d believe it. By this point, most of the police force would recognize them as Rita’s friends.

They would just have to be careful to avoid them.
