Ariana gripped the windowsill. “Tom, she’s potentially missing. Nobody can reach her, and she didn’t show up to work today.”

“What about Boone? Surely he knows where she is.”

“I asked. He doesn’t know where she is either. Nobody does.”

Tom glanced back and forth between Ari and the computer screen. “If anybody asks, I didn’t do this.”

“Didn’t do what?” she asked, showing her agreement.

He gave her a grateful nod before typing on the keyboard. His eyes widened.

“What?” Ari demanded.

Tom turned to her, his pupils dilated. “She last left yesterday morning, just after nine.”

“Yesterday? And she didn’t return?”

“No.”

“Thank you.” Ari rushed to her car, already calling Lia.

“Nobody’s seen her,” Lia answered.

“That’s because she left yesterday morning and hasn’t been back since.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.” Ariana stopped just short of telling Lia that Tom had checked.

“Did Tom tell you how we could get inside?”

“I forgot to ask.”

“We need in!”

“I’ll call you back.” Ariana ended the call and went back to the gate, everything a blur around her.

“Did you hear from her?” Tom asked.

“No. Do you know how we can get into her house?”

Tom straightened his back. “Checking her status is one thing. This is something completely different. I can’t tell you how to break into her house.”

“She could be dying in there!”

“I could get fired.”

“Please,” Ariana begged.

“I’ll call Boone.”

“He won’t do anything!”

Tom turned to his computer and tapped on the keyboard again. Then he made a phone call.

Ariana’s phone rang. It was Lia.

“Did he tell you anything?” Lia asked.
