ChapterTwenty-Eight

Ariana checked her phone. Again.

No new calls or texts from anyone.

“Can you drive any faster?” Lia asked.

“You want to sit here?” Rita glanced back.

“Sure. Pull over.”

“I can’t. It’s illegal on the freeway.”

“Take the next exit, and we’ll play musical chairs.”

“If I go any faster, I’ll get a ticket.”

“Once the cops hear what we’re doing, they’ll help us out.”

“The detectives already know,” Rita said.

“Assuming Brigit called Rojas,” Lia muttered.

“You don’t think she did?”

“She could be covering for her husband.”

Rita glanced over. “Did you see how horrified she was when she saw the doorbell cam replay? I’m certain she did the right thing.”

“Of course you would think a wife wouldn’t protect her husband,” Lia said. “If Charles was in trouble, I’d want to help him no matter what.”

“Even if he was holding someone hostage?”

Lia didn’t respond.

“You can’t be serious,” Rita said.

“He’s my husband. There’s a reason spouses don’t have to testify against each other in court.”

“I’d speak out against mine.”

“Your husband is Boone.”

Rita glanced back and glowered at her. “I meant a future hypothetical husband that I actually care about.”

Lia tapped Ari’s shoulder. “What about you? Would you defend Damon?”

“If someone’s life was in danger?”

“If people claimed he was responsible for it.”

“I’d need to find out what’s going on.”

“You’re both liars.”

“Harsh,” Rita snapped.

“Or at least in denial,” Lia quipped. “I’d protect and defend Charles until I had nothing left in me.”
