Chapter 37

Margo

I awoke in a strange bed, my head pounding. It took me a few moments to come to, longer to remember what had happened. I had been swept up in an out of control moment as threads of death zig-zagged around me in every direction. I had already felt weakened, when suddenly, each of those chilly threads snapped back to me, striking me over and over until I passed out, unable to take it any more.

Shivering, I realised I was weighed down by multiple blankets. Mam and Dad were on one side of the bed, muttering under their breaths.

“Did anyone get hurt?” I managed to say.

“Margo.” Mam flew to touch my face. “How are you?”

“What happened?”

“It was a boy from your class,” Dad said. “Dorian and your friend stopped him in time.”

“My class? Who?”

“Adam,” he said.

“The one I saved,” I said, horrified. Had I made a mistake? Was my gift wrong? “If I hadn’t saved his family, maybe—”

“Never think like that,” Mam said emphatically. “You did the right thing. But you mustn’t do it again, Margo. You’re so ill every time. Please, don’t do it again.”

I didn’t tell her I hadn’t done any of it on purpose, that I had zero control over my power.

I smiled instead, a relaxed, easy smile that belied everything I was thinking. “Everything’s going to get better now,” I promised her. “The worst is over.”

Together, we pretended that Vira hadn’t warned of the harbingers, of my death, of everything that could go wrong.

I looked around the room, still exhausted. “Wait, is this Dorian’s room?”

They exchanged a look. “We didn’t know where else to go,” Mam said. “I couldn’t think of a better place for you.”

“You were right,” I said. “But where’s Dorian?”

He burst into the room as though he had been waiting for me to say his name. He was panting.

“I just got here,” he said. “I can’t believe you all left without me.”

“What happened to Adam?” I asked.

“It looked like he had some kind of a breakdown. He’s been stalking Emma forever. But that’s over with now. I’m gonna shift to help keep you warm.” He looked at my parents. “That okay?”

Dad grinned. “I’m used to it now. Go ahead.”

A couple of minutes later, the bed was a lot warmer, thanks to a heavy, furry wolf, but I wasn’t sure I would ever be warm enough again.

Chloe handed me a hot chocolate, gasping when she brushed against my fingers. “You’re so cold.”

I held up the cup. “This will warm me up.”

I had been home for days, bored out of my mind, so when Chloe asked to meet up, I couldn’t say no.

“I heard it got crazy with Adam,” I said. She was wearing a scarf. I wondered how badly he had hurt her.

“It was intense,” she said, staring into space. “Emma seems much happier. Even her parents are going easy on her. Probably feel guilty that they treated her like a criminal.”

“Have you heard what’s going to happen with him?”
