The room veritably burst with cheerful voices. She had a son and a daughter-in-law. Now she also had daughters and sons-in-law. She had a grandson, and already Kitty felt like a granddaughter.

In addition to that, Emma was thriving in her new position as a seamstress. Jane was back at the asylum with her friends and teachers. Lord Windham had been removed from the committee and was no longer welcome at the asylum, no matter that he’d tried desperately to buy his way back in. Or so Lord Finch had said.

In the weeks since Charlotte had reminded them who she was and that she was not to be trifled with, the committee had returned to listening to her ideas and treating her with respect.

She and Seth had steadily been making their way through all the other girls at the asylum, meeting with them to ask after their wellbeing and safety. They’d also spoken with several young women who’d already left for positions. So far, they’d found three other young women forced into unfavorable positions by Lord Windham. But no other committee members seemed involved.

Charlotte let her gaze rest on Seth. On the whole, her life was certainly looking bright. As were the lives of many orphaned girls.

“What’s that smile for?” he asked, spearing a piece of ham with his fork.

“I love you, and I love our family. That’s all.”

“I love you too,” he said, fully and genuinely smiling. “And I love this.” He motioned toward all the people at the table.

“Are you ready, then?” Charlotte asked. “To tackle this next part of life?”

“With you,” he said, leaning in and giving her another kiss, “I’m ready for anything.”
