He didn’t give them time to respond but strode from the room.

“But we haven’t even had dinner yet,” he heard Dinah call out.

“I’m not hungry,” he lied as he slipped out of the room.

As he stood in the entry waiting for Brushfire to be brought around front, Dinah hurried over to him. For several minutes, she simply stood there and silently stared at him.

At length, she spoke. “I think you should know . . .” She paused briefly, then drew herself up. “I think you’re being a coward.”

Seth’s brow creased. “Excuse me?”

“Running away from Town like this. I think you should stay.” She pursed her lips.

Seth was too tired for this tonight, and his knee was starting to ache again. Maybe he’d take a gentle ride home. Or perhaps not. His knee may just have to get over the fact that while his body didn’t like a bruising ride, his heart and mind still frequently needed it.

“How is my leaving London an act of cowardice?” he asked, this time not bothering to keep his exhaustion from coloring his tone.

“You know. Because you really ought to be here.”

“Why do I need to be here? You are happy. Eliza is happy. Rachel isn’t even in London.”

Dinah’s voice dropped low. “Not for us. For...you know.”

He truly didn’t. She’d been hinting around all night at something. But the long days and late nights were catching up to him, and just now he didn’t have the energy to care enough to puzzle it all out.

He loved his daughter and always would. But, in many ways, she was Stanton’s problem now. And good luck to the man. Dinah was not always easy to handle.

Seth took hold of her shoulder and pulled her in, kissing the top of her head. “Good night, my dear.” Without another word, he walked out, mounted Brushfire, and headed for home.
