“THANKS FOR GETTING your news with us here at WKJY. I’m Melanie Quinn, along with David Kent, wishing you a great day, Savannah.”

“Aaand, you’re off the air,” the production director announces.

I unplug my microphone and slam it on the desk in a huff.

“Great job, Melanie, but I thought I was supposed to make the closing comments?”

“Well, Dave…” I face him with hands on my hips. “I didn’t think it was a big deal since you jacked the human interest story I was supposed to read.” My face is probably turning the same color as my hair, and I realize I sound like a spoiled brat, so I quickly walk away, trying to reign in my ire.

Since I started here two years ago at WKJY News, the guy has made his distaste for me well known. I’m not sure if he’s threatened by me or what his freaking problem is, but he needs to get over it. I love this job, and I won’t let him bully me.

The day I was offered this job is vividly etched in my mind for many reasons. I was living with my douche bag of a boyfriend at the time in California. I was extremely nervous to tell him, knowing how he’d react. I didn’t give the opportunity serious consideration since I knew Andrew wouldn’t want to relocate. I wasn’t looking to move either but was happy to get the offer. Still, I held a tiny bit of hope he’d be proud of me or a teeny bit supportive, considering I supported him in every way through medical school.

We started drifting apart once he began working rotations at the hospital, and the miserable hours took a toll on our love life. My plan that night was to make him a romantic dinner and rekindle passion into our distant relationship.

When I opened the door to our one-bedroom apartment, hands full of groceries, I was humiliated. Andrew was on the couch, balls deep in one of the nurses from the hospital. I’m assuming she was a nurse since she had on a costume and was screaming “Fuck me, Doctor Miller” at the top of her lungs. All I could think was, the jerk really does have an ugly ass.

It’s the moment I knew I was taking the job. The bag I was holding crashed to the floor with a thud, as I tried to avert my eyes from the porno happening on the couch. I watched the oranges roll away across the floor along with my future.

“Melanie, there you are.” My co-worker and best friend, Gabriella pokes her head into the green room where I’m trying to escape. “Why are you hiding out? Don’t let the douche get to you. He’s just trying to get under your skin.”

“Yeah. Like a parasite.”

Gabby’s been an amazing friend since I came to Savannah to build a new life. I was scared as hell, not knowing anyone, but I needed the change. Now, I have a job I love, and my best friend and I have a standing yoga date at the local gym, Flex, twice a week.

Gabby and I worked closely my first week at the station, then partied hard the weekend after she helped me move in to my new place. I wasn’t a clubbing type of person, but Gabby and I became forever tequila buddies and best friends.

The only drawback with our friendship is she’s continuously trying to set me up on a blind date, which usually ends up nothing short of disastrous. Gabby works in the field right now doing entertainment stories, but she’s hoping Dave retires soon, so we get to anchor side by side.

“Arie wants us both in a meeting right after lunch.”

“Shit! I hope it has nothing to do with Dave and me.”

“Nah. He doesn’t give a shit about that, but he sounded serious. I think it might be about those creepy letters you’ve been getting from your stalker fan.”

“Perfect. Arie in a bad mood is not really what I want to deal with today.” I roll my eyes.

“Let’s get some lunch, and when we get back, we can face the wrath of Arie together.”

“I was gonna grab some coffee at—”

“Deja Brew. I know,” she finishes my sentence.

“Come on, let’s go see if your imaginary boyfriend Captain America is there.”
