“I’ll be on the night shift. I’ll be back later. I think Jason’s a little pissed my car is still in your driveway this morning.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get you in any trouble. I can talk to Jason if you want and tell him you stayed because I was afraid.”

He’s quiet for a minute before he looks up at me and takes a deep breath. “Look, Mel.”

Uh Oh, here it comes.

It’s going to be the “it’s not you, it’s me” talk.

“Look, Chase, give it to me straight. I’m a big girl,” I say before taking a sip of my cold coffee.

I hate the way he’s looking at me. The man sitting in front of me is not the same man from last night.

“Last night was really nice.” He stares at his plate.

Nice?

“But it never should’ve happened, and it can’t happen again. My job is to protect you.” He finally makes eye contact and I shoot him the dirtiest look I can muster. “This is my fault, but there can be no more confusion here. We can’t be involved, Melanie. I need this job, and last night lines were crossed.”

I guess it meant more to me.

Apparently, I’m just a terrible judge of character, because I thought he felt something too. This is why I don’t need a man in my life. I really should get a cat. I should have seen this coming.

“There’s nothing I won’t do to protect you.”

“Even if it means you have to stay away from me?”

He’s silent, but it’s okay because I already know the answer.

“You should go. Thanks for everything,” I say in a low, calm voice, before stalking out of the room, leaving him sitting there.

I’ll call you if I’m pregnant, asshole.
