“JESUS, CHASE, YOU carry a gun?” I say in a hushed voice, shadowing him into the house. I place my hand on his back making him jolt.

“Dammit, Melanie, I told you to stay outside.”

My eyes become saucers, my heart beating outside my chest when Chase flicks on the light. My fingers dig into the skin of his upper arms and I let out a loud gasp when I see my entire house ransacked.

“Wait on the porch, Melanie,” Chase says sternly.

“Fuck,” I whisper.

My feet are rooted to the floor, unable to move. Chase scours the room then glances down at me where I’m cemented in place. He must notice I’m visually shaking because he snakes his arm around my waist, maneuvering me to the couch.

“Sit here and don’t move. I’ll be right back.”

I’m still breathing rapidly, unable to move from the sofa while Chase canvasses the entire house. My skin is clammy, and I feel disoriented as I rock back and forth with my arms wrapped around myself. I vaguely remember, overhearing him call someone while he was standing in the kitchen a minute ago.

“You’re shaking, baby. Are you okay?” I barely nod.

He tosses a blanket over my shoulders and pulls me tight against his chest.

“Here, take a sip of water,” he orders, seeming unsure of what to do with me in my current state.

I’m not sure how long we sit here with him rocking me back and forth like a baby, whispering everything is going to be okay in my ear. I don’t want to move from his arms.

After a while, the tension starts to melt away, and my body slowly comes back to life. I’m still a little light-headed, but I feel unsettled, as the reality of it all hits.

“Why do you carry a gun?”

He chuckles. “Well, I am a bodyguard, and technically, I’m supposed to be working, not seducing my client.”

I move off the couch, feeling the need to do something, and begin pacing around the room, under Chase’s watchful eye. My eyes start to flood with tears, and he’s by my side in an instant. He pulls me into his chest and I wrap my arms around his waist letting his warmth blanket me.

“I won’t let anything happen to you.”

I feel safe here with him. “Okay.”

When the doorbell rings, I nearly jump out of my skin.

I recognize the two large men entering the room as Jason and Grayson, from the day I met them at the studio. I’m not sure who the other three gorilla-sized men are, parading through my house and yard, inspecting every inch. I sit calmly on the sofa, sipping the tea Chase made earlier, watching them walk back and forth as Grayson barks orders. I wouldn’t want to piss that guy off.

Chase is standing in the corner speaking to his boss in whispering tones, and by the look on Jason’s face, he doesn’t seem too pleased. I’m not sure why he’s mad at Chase, but it’s starting to piss me off. If Chase wasn’t here with me tonight, I don’t know what I would have done.

“Ms. Quinn, do you have any place to stay for the night?” Jason asks as the two make their way toward me.

“Um, I guess I can call my friend Gabby.”

“She’s staying with me.” Chase quickly interrupts the conversation. Jason’s jaw clenches, and he glares at Chase.

“Chase, can I speak to you for a minute please?” Jason drags him into the kitchen.

“I am taking the job seriously.” I overhear Chase argue.

“I don’t like the way you’re looking at her. What’s going on between the two of you?” Jason says in a hushed voice, and I fly off the couch.

“Excuse me. I’m sorry to interrupt.” I storm into the kitchen. “Mr. Kane, I assure you, Chase has been nothing but professional, since day one. I feel safe with him, and I’ll be staying with him tonight.” My hands fly to my hips.

Jason clears his throat, and he opens his mouth like he’s about to argue, then thinks better of it.

“Look, Mr. Kane, you are being paid to protect me, and the only one I want doing that is Chase. If he can’t do it, then I no longer require your services, because I don’t want anyone else.”
