A clatter of voices ring out and the muffled sound of a gun shot is the last sound I hear before everything starts to go dark.

My only thought is Chase—his sparkling blue eyes—his beautiful smile.

My body goes limp.

My mind goes blank.

“Melanie.”

My head feels like it was hit with a ninety mile an hour fastball as I struggle to open my eyes to the sound of Chase’s voice. I listen intently to the other voices in the room. Chase is standing over me wearing a set of grey hospital scrubs. I hear the words “Diazepam,” and “dead at the scene” just before everything goes black again.

Releasing a loud gasp, I jolt up ready to fight.

“Baby, it’s me. You’re okay.”

Chase’s voice immediately calms me. I blink rapidly trying to focus on my surroundings. Where the fuck am I?

“It’s okay, baby. I’m right here.” His soft voice soothes me. My vision is hazy for a moment as I adjust to the bright light.

“Chase?”

My eyes flutter open, meeting the prettiest ocean eyes. I struggle to stay awake, but my lids are so heavy they hurt. My clouded brain attempts to put everything together.

My next thought is ouch! Why does my head feel like it’s being squeezed in a vice?

“What happened?” I groan.

“There she is. Welcome back,” Chase says in a comforting voice.

He reaches for my hand, and my thumping heart immediately slows.

“It’s all over. Just rest, you’ve been through a lot.”

Tears stream down my face as I recall some of the events from tonight, and my crying quickly turns to sobs. Chase takes a seat on the bed next to me, gently wiping my tears away.

“I remember some of it. You saved me.” He leans over gently pressing his hands to my cheeks and places a tender kiss on my forehead.

“I’ll always be here to protect you.” He places his forehead softly on mine, stroking my hair.

“Thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me. I would lay down my life for you. I love you.” He wraps me up in his loving embrace, long enough for the tears to stop falling.

“What happened to him?”

“Don’t worry about it now. That monster will never hurt you again.” He crushes me back to his chest.

“There was a gunshot.” I raise my chin to look at him when he’s quiet for a moment. “Are you okay?” Sadness quickly clouds his features.

“I’m perfect.”

“Can you lay next to me for a minute?”

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

I scoot over trying not to wince from the throbbing pain in my head and tug him down. He wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me close.
