“I don’t know what I would have done if something happened to you.”

“I’m right here thanks to you.” I snuggle against his chest, never wanting to let go.

“I love you so much, Melanie.” He whispers into my hair, holding me so tight that it’s bordering painful. I don’t care. There’s no where else I want to be.

“I love you, Chase.”

I stay in his safe, comforting arms for a long, long time, content just listening to the sound of his heartbeat. We’re interrupted when someone clears their throat. A dark-haired woman in a white lab coat wheels in a bulky piece of medical equipment to the side of my bed.

“I don’t think you should be lying in her bed, sir.”

“He’s fine,” I snap at her a little too harshly.

“It’s okay, baby,” Chase mutters before rising off the bed. I miss his lulling protection, immediately.

“Ms. Quinn, my name is Cathy. I’ll be performing your trans-vaginal ultrasound.”

“What’s that for?” My brows draw together.

“Can you please give us a moment?” Chase addresses Cathy. She looks back and forth between Chase and me in confusion. He waits for her to leave the room before taking a seat on the bed next to me.

“They did a blood-workup because of the Diazepam injected into your system.”

“Okay.”

“You’re pregnant.”

“Oh,” I whisper.

“You don’t seem surprised.”

“I guess I’m not.” I turn my face away from him, letting the information sink in.

“Hey, look at me.” Inching forward, Chase palms my cheek, forcing me to look at him. “This baby is a blessing. I’m out of my freaking mind with joy.”

I give him a half smile. “Our relationship is so new, what if you change your mind?”

I’ve known this man for such a short time, and I’m so in love with him. I’m not sure I could survive losing him.

“Melanie,” Chase says my name as a growl. “I love you more than anything in this world. When I look at you, all I can see is our future…you as my wife…as the mother of my children. I want everything with you.” I smile through the tears.

“See that smile?” He touches my lips with his fingertips. “It’s the smile I want to put on your face every single day for the rest of my life. I’m crazy in love with you.”

Gently cupping the back of my neck, he presses his soft lips to mine and kisses me deeply, like it’s a necessity for him—I know it is for me. Nothing in the world feels better than when he kisses me, and I can’t ever imagine it getting old. He breaks the kiss and my breath hitches just from the way he’s beholding me—the love in his eyes undeniable.

“What do you say, shall we meet our baby?”
