“Oh,” she starts, shaking her head as if to clear her mind. “Yeah, I don’t know.”

Glancing behind me, I look around the crowded entrance to the restaurant to see if I can spot anyone I know. Whoever caught Kendall’s eye. When I turn back to face her, she’s blushing, her head down as she quickly demolishes the last of her salad.

I’ve obviously missed something.

“Anything you want to share with the rest of the table?” I ask as I hear her phone chime.

“What do you mean?”

She’s a worse liar than I am. Her voice is laced with guilt and panic.

“Who is he, K? I saw the expression on your face.”

“No one,” she denies, her phone chiming again.

“Why don’t you answer your phone then?”

“We’re eating dinner. I can check it later.”

“What if it’s important?”

“It’s probably not.” Tossing her napkin on her empty plate, Kendall stands, rubbing her tattoo. “I’m going to use the bathroom. Will you order me a cheesecake?”

She’s walking away before I can agree. I don’t think she realizes she gives away as much as she does with her body language. Normally her head is held high, shoulders back, each step taken with purpose. She’s fearless in everything she does. However, as I watch her walk toward the hall leading to the restrooms, I notice the slight slump of her shoulders and the fever in her steps.

Yeah, there’s a guy. She might not be ready to tell me about him yet, but he exists. I’m certain of it.
