The tension between us builds as silence falls. Julian reaches forward and places his hand under my chin, lifting until my eyes meet his. What I see is even more startling than his confession. It's not lust. It's not even admiration. It's something more.

I should make a confession of my own. Be honest with him. Tell him I feel the same way. Instead...

"Friends."

I don't know why I say it. I don't mean it. You can hear I don't mean it.

It came out sounding like a question instead of a statement.

I want what he wants. Only, I don't believe in happily ever after anymore. I don't believe in love. Which leaves us with two options. Friends or fuck buddies.

And being fuck buddies with someone like Julian Chambers would be a big mistake. Because after he is done with me, we wouldn't be able to be friends.

"Tomorrow. We can be friends again tomorrow, pretty girl. Tonight, I want more."

"Just for tonight," I whisper, dooming myself in the process.

The words are barely past my lips when he closes the small space between us and seals our agreement with a kiss. His hands slide into my hair, holding me hostage.

Time ceases to exist. The world around me disappears. The only thing that matters is the feel of Julian's lips against mine. Soft and gentle yet demanding more and more until he pulls away, resting his forehead against mine. I'm out of breath, my heart beating wildly in my chest, the sound drumming in my ears.

"I've been dreaming about that for years," he finally says, sliding out of his chair and offering me his hand. When I place my palm in his, he immediately pulls my body against his. "I can't wait to do it again."

This kiss is less urgent, more passionate. I take advantage of our proximity, my hands roaming. Touching. Feeling everything I dream about. Memorizing the way his abs tighten beneath my fingertips.

When his thumbs graze the bare skin above my hips, I push out of our embrace.

"We should go," he suggests between heavy breaths.

"I, um..."

Julian closes the distance between us, leaning in close so only I can hear him. "I want to make you a new promise, pretty girl. But I can't do it here."

When he pulls back, knee-weakening smirk firmly in place, I know I'm screwed. Not literally, yet, but I won't be able to deny him whatever he wants. And I have a feeling he wants more than a kiss.

"You really shouldn't be able to look at a woman that way," I state firmly, turning and heading for the door. I hear him rushing to catch up just as I'm about to open it.

"You really shouldn’t be allowed to wear yoga pants to work then because I have a hard time focusing on anything other than your ass." His counter is not what I was expecting.

The cool night air causes a shiver to run up my spine—yes, that's the story I'm going to stick with—as I attempt to think of a comeback. "You said black pants."

"Of all the things I've said over the years, that's the one you remember?" He laughs.

"What are you talking about?"

Julian tucks me in the passenger seat of his Rover before answering. "I've been trying to show you how I feel for years. You just haven't been paying attention."

He shuts the door before I can reply, not that I could if I wanted to. His words have stunned me into silence.
