We stayed late that night. I was frustrated because I couldn't figure out what was missing. The tacos themselves were tasty, but the dish wasn't complete. He swooped in and saved the day. Like he always does. Showing me he cares without saying the words.

Shaking away the memories of better times, I continue with my presentation, moving on to the salad course, auto-pilot taking over.

Berries and shaved almonds. A strawberry, poppy seed dressing, house-made with Greek yogurt.

Gluten-free soups.

A vegan grain bowl.

Baked fish.

Fresh fruit tarts for dessert.

Taste, describe, move on.

All without the support of Julian, who should get credit for all his hard work.

My presentation, as flawless as it is, feels flat. My enthusiasm for the dishes we created together has dissipated. It could be the fact I'm presenting alone instead of with Julian by my side. Or it could be because he didn't even bother to stay and watch.

Both Justine and Julian Sr. love my modifications and suggestions.

And I'm happy I was able to show both of them ways to increase the health value of the food they offer.

But my heart aches in my chest, realizing I may have just lost Julian before I ever really had him.
