Picking up his own phone, Adam walks in the other room. I'm sure he's calling Wyatt. Or maybe his mom. Which reminds me, I need to call mine. Sending Chloe a quick text, I dial my mom's number and listen as it rings.

ME: I said yes! Gonna call my mom really quick and then I'll call you.

CHLOE: Yeah! We'll almost be sisters!!!

"Hello?"

"Hey, Mom. How are you?"

"Addison, dear. I'm good. How are you?"

"Good, Mom. I have some news."

"Good news, I hope."

The last time I had "news," I was moving to Fairview. There was no mention of Adam. No mention of moving in with him. As far as my mother knows, I'm not seeing anyone at the moment. Telling her I'm pregnant and engaged should be interesting.

"I think so. I've met someone."

"I'm assuming you're referring to Adam. And I think you've done more than met him," she states, her voice filled with laughter.

"Um, yeah. Who told you about him?"

"We've spoken a few times now. He seems like a nice young man, Addison."

Of course he called my mother. And Chloe probably helped him get in contact with her.

"He is, Mom. He's fantastic. I'm sorry I didn't tell you about him myself."

"Oh, Addison. I know how you are. If you're calling now, it must be getting serious between the two of you, though."

That's an understatement.

"I'm guessing if he called you that he asked for your blessing to marry me, so yeah, things are serious."

"Good, I kind of like him." Her words don’t match her tone. Something is off, but I ignore it for the moment so I can get to the real reason for my call.

"You haven't even met him, Mom, not that I don't think you'll love him when you do, but how can you even tell?"

"He loves you. That's all that matters to me. I can hear it in his voice, in the way he talks about you. So did you say yes this time?"

And there it is.

My mother's backhand across my face from three states away.

She never understood why I didn't agree to marry Liam. Even after we lost the baby. Even when he asked me a week later. She'll never understand how much that one tragic incident pushed us away from each other. Liam thought marriage was the answer. So did my mother.

She's never let me forget it. She probably never will.

Maybe meeting Adam will change her mind. Maybe seeing how much he loves me, how happy we are together, will prove to her that all things happen for a reason. That Liam and I weren't meant to be together despite the fact they both thought so.

"I did, Mom. And I have more news."

Or maybe dropping the baby surprise on her will change her attitude toward me. She has to know that my distance from her has to do with her attitude toward my decisions. If she won't support my relationship with Adam and the fact we're having a baby, she won't have the opportunity to be a part of the baby's life.

"What could be more exciting than getting married?"

She sounds like me. The tone, the unnecessary amount of sarcasm in her voice. Well, Mother… let's put you in your place.
