"We're having a baby."

Silence.

As I expected there to be.

"So, I was thinking, maybe you'd like to come visit and meet your future son-in-law? You could even help me decorate the nursery if you want."

"You're pregnant?"

"Yeah. It was a shock to us too. I found out this morning."

"So, you're getting married because he knocked you up? I thought that was beneath you."

Anger. No, rage courses through my veins.

What gives her the right to judge me? Us? Our situation?

Nothing, that's what. No one asked for her opinion. No one ever will.

"No, Mom. Actually, he asked before I told him I was pregnant. So, you have a choice to make right now. Either you can accept that I'm going to marry Adam, the man you claim to like so much after a phone conversation. You can also accept that we're starting a family. Or you can choose not to be a part of our lives. It's as simple as that. Because there is no room in this house for someone who doesn't support us one hundred percent."

The line is silent for a few beats before she finally speaks up.

"I'll take a look at plane tickets and let you know when I'm coming."

"Sounds good. Good night, Mom."
