I contemplate quitting.

Walking away from the weeks of ass-kissing I've put in.

It would solve a few issues for me.

First, I wouldn't be allowing Max's sister, Willow, to put makeup on me. Second, I wouldn't have to squeeze myself into a cheerleading uniform, complete with a skirt so short it feels like my ass is hanging out.

But most importantly, I would be free of Max's careful watch, and I'd be able to pursue Evie more than I already am. I'm trying to take it slow. To work her up to the idea of going against her brother's wishes. I'm also attempting to warm him up to me. For the guy to like me enough to give me permission to date his sister before I have to overstep and ignore every warning he's given me.

And there have been multiple.

The reason I don't quit is because of the look on Evie's face. I'm tugging down the damn skirt, again, and when I look up my eyes meet hers.

I saw the same look in her eyes earlier.

Her beautiful blues are dark pools of lust.

She can say whatever she wants, but there’s no denying she wants me as much as I want her. I just have to find a way to convince her to take the risk.

Though, every time Max growls in my direction, glares at me, stands a little too close for comfort... I second-guess my decision to pursue her. It's hard not to. He's intimidating as fuck.

"Listen up!" Max hollers over the grumbles echoing through the tent. He steps up on a chair and faces the twelve of us, smirking. "First off, you all look beautiful. Not my type, but that's okay."

A few of the guys give him a chuckle, but you can hear it's forced. Anything to make Max happy.

"Second, if we're going to win the spirit competition, I need you to give it your all. It's not just about strutting your stuff. And to help you with the cheer I asked you to memorize"—the group text he sent this morning written in all caps—"ny sister has graciously agreed to run through it with you."

Max steps down and then helps Willow onto the chair he vacated. She lines us up, a crowd gathering behind her to watch us in action. My eyes lock with Evie's as she stands off to the side with Alexis. She's smirking at me, assessing my outfit, and attempting not to laugh.

I can only imagine how silly I look. There wasn't a mirror, and I was thankful for that. I don't want to know what I look like. It's probably better that I don't.

Following Willow's instructions, we pump our arms, pop our hips, and shout at the top of our lungs. We run through the routine three times before she deems us ready to perform.

When I look to Evie for her reaction, she's gone. There's no sign of her, but standing in her spot is Max. His stare is locked on me, and a shiver of unease crawls up my spine.

My senses go on high alert when he starts in my direction.

"Looking good, little brother." How nice of him to compliment me. I might even believe him if he didn't sound like he was ready to rip my head from my neck and play soccer with it for fun.

"How long before I can wash this shit off my face? It's starting to itch."

"I think you have bigger things to worry about right now than makeup. I saw you watching her. Staring at her. I thought I made myself clear when I said she was off limits."

Where the hell was he? How does he see everything?

Maybe it's time to take a stand. What's the worst that could happen? He could punch me right now and save me from the embarrassment of performing a cheer routine. Ruin my makeup. Give me a black eye.

There are thirty other guys standing in the tent right now. One of them would have my back, right? Pull him off me. Hold him so he couldn't continue to pummel me. Because I wouldn't fight back. Not right away at least. He deserves to get a few hits in for free considering she is his sister. And I was mentally undressing her.

"You were clear."

So much for bravery. I'm such a fucking pussy.

"And yet you're still fucking her with your eyes."

"I want to apologize, Max, but I also don't want to lie to you." My words come out rushed. I'm afraid if I don't get them all out, he will start swinging. "Your sister is gorgeous. Both of them. But I heard every word you said to me. I'm not good enough for her."
