Evie

"You're crazy! I hate you!"

Max’s face remains stoic as I continue yelling at him.

He has no right to ban me from the Halloween party. I put a lot of hard work into my costume. Sierra polished my nails green last night to match my outfit. We went shopping to get eyeshadow and accessories to compliment the piece.

"Aren't you going to say anything?" I finally ask, taking a deep breath and attempting to compose myself. Lo is standing next to me, shaking her head in disappointment at Max.

"No. The decision is final. My house, my rules."

"Get out!"

Shrugging his shoulders, Max leaves through my open dorm room door as I plop down on my bed, willing my tears not to fall. I invited Lo over to show her my costume. Had I known Max was with her at the time, I wouldn't have asked her to come. I didn't even get a chance to show her before he banned me from going to the party.

"Evie," Lo says, taking a seat next to me on the bed. I roll away from her, not wanting to see the pity in her eyes. "I'll talk to him."

"Don't bother. His house, his rules, remember? Nothing is going to change his mind."

"There are other parties you can go to," she offers, listing off a few.

I'd consider them if I weren't flying solo this weekend. Sierra is leaving Friday night to go see her boyfriend. As independent as I am, walking into a party alone, where I don't know anyone, isn't something I'm willing to do.

"I'll be fine," I whisper to Lo, the words more for my benefit than hers.

"I have to go. Do you want to come back to my place with me? Kendall is out with Declan tonight. We can watch a movie or something. I'll order in pizza."

"No thanks." I appreciate her offer, but I just want to be alone right now. I need to get used to the feeling since I'll be that way for the rest of my life if Max has anything to say about it.

Lo finally leaves after attempting to bribe me a few more times with promises of my favorite foods. I can hear the worry in her voice.

Actual concern.

It sounds nothing like the words that came out of Max's mouth. Not even close.

Rolling onto my back, I stare up at the imperfections in my ceiling until my vision blurs. I can't fix the cracks. I can't change the fact they exist. What I can do is accept them.

The same way I have to accept that my brother will always be overprotective and in my business, attempting to control my life.

My phone vibrates on my pillow, and I reach for it, already knowing who the message will be from.

SIERRA: Is your brother gone?

ME: Yeah. Lo left too.

SIERRA: Want to meet me at the cafeteria for dinner?

ME: That sounds horrible. I'm on my way.

SIERRA: The choices tonight are awful.

ME: Sounds about right.

Tossing my phone aside, I hear it ping a few times while I slip my shoes on and grab my purse. When I pick it back up, I’m surprised to see a message from an unknown number.

UNKNOWN: Heard you were banned from the Halloween Party at the Kappa house.

ME: Who is this?
