Nodding, I make my exit, weaving through the crowd as I head toward the front door. When I see my angel standing off to the side, talking with Max, I come to a stop and can't help but stare. Max's back is to me. He has no idea I'm looking at her, admiring her beauty. Wondering what she smells like. Wishing I'd found out earlier.

"Ballsy, don't you think?"

"Didn't look like he hit you too hard," I state, turning to face Finn.

"I've known Max my entire life and trust me, that punch hurt like a bitch."

"Why didn't you hit him back?"

"Because he needed to let out his rage, and it was either going to be on me or you."

"Thanks for taking one for the team, I guess."

"That's not what I was doing." Finn places his large hand on my shoulder, making me feel even smaller than I already do in his presence. "He needed to get that out. He may have given me and Lo his blessing, but that doesn't mean he isn't pissed about us being together. He loves his sisters. Always been protective of them. Since their dad died, he's gone a little overboard."

"Like telling me I can't even look at Evie."

"Yeah, like that. But it comes from a good place. He doesn't know you. Doesn't trust you. Hell, sometimes I wonder if he trusts me, and I'm his best friend. I have been since we were in diapers."

In the past week since meeting Max, I've learned a few things about the man. One, he loves this fraternity. Two, he loves his family. And finally, three, he might be crazy as fuck.

I mean, who punches their best friend after giving them permission to date their sister?

Max, that's who.

The fact that I don't have his blessing to even look at Evie... I can only imagine I'd have more than a busted lip if he caught us together.

"Do me a favor," Finn continues. "Don't write off the fraternity because Max is overprotective. Once he gets to know you, he'll lighten up."

"Is it going to take twenty years?"

It's meant to be a joke, but even I can hear the wobble in my voice over the music.

"Probably. But if you're good for Evie, every punch will be worth it."

"I barely know the girl." Though, to be fair, I'd like to know her a whole lot better. And if Max weren't her brother, I'm thinking I might get the chance.

She felt it, the pull. The magnetism. There's no denying it. I saw it in her eyes. The way her body reacted to my touch.

"Just slow down. We all love Evie. We all have her back. Max is her only brother by blood, but the rest of us think of her like a little sister. We all want to protect her heart. But she has a lot of Max in her. She's stubborn and independent. Which is why they fight. Why he pushes her. So go slow. Don't let Max scare you away. And for the love of God, learn to open your eyes. You can't let him catch you off guard."

Finn laughs as he walks away.

My first thought—he seems cool.

My second—Max is standing behind me.

Damn it. I almost escaped.

"Making friends?" he asks as he steps in my line of sight.

"Nah. He was warning me off the same way you were, only using less physical violence."

"Finn's always been a peacekeeper. Can't help himself."

"Seems like an okay guy."

"He's the best. You'd be lucky to know him. Which brings me to my next topic."
