Evie

Screw Max.

He should know better than to tell me what I can and can't do. Who I can and can't talk to.

It just makes me want to do those things more. If for no other reason than to piss him off.

Slamming the door behind me, I throw my purse against the wall and growl as it bounces off the concrete and lands on my unmade bed.

"Someone's in a mood."

Sienna's perched on her bed, her knees drawn up to her chest, eyes focused on her toenails as she carefully applies neon green polish to her right foot. Her left toes have already been painted neon orange. The colors match her fingernails, which also match the streaks in her dirty blonde hair.

Her personality is as bright as the colors she's flaunting. Her clothing acts as an accessory the same way a purse or earrings would for me. But it's her makeup that makes me wish I was as bold as Sienna.

Dark. Almost gothic. Smoky eyes. Black lipstick.

It's a complete contradiction to the rest of her appearance. And it's always flawless. Perfect.

"Wanna talk about it?" she asks as I fall backward on my bed and stare up at the ceiling. The white paint is starting to crack, my eyes focusing on the imperfections.

"My brother's an ass."

"This isn't news, Evie."

No, no it's not. He was rude to Sienna the first time he met her. Which is why when I asked if she wanted to come to the party with me tonight, she declined. Her exact words were something along the lines of, "I'd rather cut my ears off than listen to your brother preach all night long."

"No, but he took it to a whole new level tonight."

Letting out a sigh, I give Sienna the run-down of my night, not leaving out a single detail.

From Max introducing me to his frat brothers when I arrived, to warning them off in the same breath.

How I met Leo. How Max threatened him in the bathroom. Finn stepping in and getting punched for standing up to Max.

All of which proves how crazy my brother is these days.

Not that I'm surprised he punched Finn. I think he's been wanting to do that for a while now. No one else pays Max any attention, but I see the look in his eyes when Finn and Lo are around. When he kisses her or wraps his arm around her. Even the smallest touches send Max into a fit of rage.

He's been able to control it so far, but I knew it was only a matter of time before he would lose it on Finn.

Which reminds me, Brady owes me twenty bucks.

The rest of their little tribe seemed to think Max was sincere when he gave Finn and Lo his blessing. Everyone except Brady.

I said it'd happen before Christmas. Brady thought Max wouldn't snap until Finn proposed.

"So let me get this straight," Sierra starts as I roll onto my side to face her. "Your brother said he was okay with Willow and Finn dating, but he shows it by punching his best friend. He's not okay with you dating anyone, and he shows it by threatening any guy who talks to you. Sounds about right?"

All I can do is laugh because Sierra hit the nail on the head.

And my brother doesn't make any sense.

"Why not just date whoever the hell you want, then? If he's going to be mad regardless, at least have a little fun."

Sierra's words rattle around in my head the rest of the night. They haunt me in my dreams. They’re the first thing I think about when I open my eyes the next morning.

Even after weeks of avoiding my brother, my friends, and throwing myself into classes, her words are all I can think about.
