I ponder how to answer her question while my sisters gather around me. Juniper steals the puppy from me and lays on the floor with her.

“It’s my fault,” I say because it is. “I should’ve never believed an out-of-towner would want to stay in Winter Falls.”

“What about the community center? Is another architect from Davis Williams being sent to oversee the project?”

“I don’t give the first shit about the community center,” I snarl at Lilac.

“It was a perfectly reasonable question.”

Ashlyn rolls her eyes. “Yeah, if you don’t feel emotions.”

“I feel emotions. Why does everyone think I don’t have emotions? I’m human. All humans feel emotions. Granted people express their emotions in different ways, but everyone has them.”

I hold up my hand before Lilac begins a lecture on human emotions. Knowing her, she has one prepared. My sister may have robotic tendencies, but she’s wicked smart and retains every bit of information she encounters.

Aspen clears her throat. “We’ll circle around to the community center and human emotions.”

“Oh please, no,” Juniper mumbles but Aspen ignores her.

“What I want to know is why Ellery thinks it’s her fault Cole left.”

Ashlyn raises her hand. “Me too.”

“He got a job offer from another architecture firm.”

“Albrecht & Bettencourt?” Lilac asks.

I narrow my eyes at her. “How do you know?”

“A recruiter called and asked for a recommendation for Cole.”

My eyes narrow, and I spit laser beams at her. “What the hell, Lilac? You didn’t think to tell me?”

She shrugs. “Why would I tell you? He’s committed to you. You’re having a baby together. He’s not going to accept a job in New York City.”

“Wrong! Where do you think he is at this very moment?”

She checks her watch. “He can’t be in New York City. He’d never have made it there by now.”

“Someone strangle her for me. I’m too pregnant to roll off this couch and do it myself.”

Ashlyn springs to her feet. “I got your back.” She cracks her knuckles as she stalks toward Lilac.

Lilac doesn’t appear intimidated. “What are you doing?”

Ashlyn tilts her head back and cackles. “I’m going to suck your blood.”

Lilac sighs. “You do know vampires don’t exist?”

I pick up a pillow and throw it at her. “Lilac Bean West, stop being so damn literal.”

Her cheeks pinken. “Sorry.”

“Does this mean I don’t get to slap her around a bit?” Ashlyn mimes slapping someone in the face.

Juniper dumps the puppy in my lap. “I think you need more cuddle time.”

I cradle the puppy to me like she’s a baby. “What am I going to do with you, Honey? I won’t have a yard now. Do you want to live in an apartment?”
