“Are you becoming old and wise all of a sudden?” Lavinia teased.

Raika laughed and I glared at both of them.

We agreed to meet and have dinner together later.

On the way back to the village, I texted Dom and told him about the meeting in an hour. Rue asked Lucille to help Vianna with the kids in her place, and Hamill had been notified and ready.

We still had time, so Raika and I stopped at our house.

Ourhouse.

I liked the sound of that.

“Are you hungry?” Raika asked me once we entered the house. She let go of my hand and walked to the kitchen in the back.

“I am, but it’s not for food.”

She halted and turned to me, her blue eyes shining with mischief. “What do you mean?”

I advanced toward her.

Then froze.

“Raika—“

Someone jumped behind her and wrapped a hand around her throat.

Roman.

Rage surged from within my veins and the Shadow Wolf screamed at me.

“Stay back!” he yelled. His hand shifted into a claw, his nails pressed along Raika’s throat. He wrapped his other arm around her waist and pulled her flush against him.

My vision became a sea of red. “Let her go,” I snarled.

“Never!” he shouted. “She goes with me, or she dies right here!”

“Roman, stop this,” Raika said, her voice strained. She stretched her neck, trying to avoid his grip, in vain. She jerked against him, but he only tightened his hold. A drop of blood slid down her throat.

“I’m going to kill you.” The Shadow Wolf was at my fingertips, and I was having trouble finding a reason not to let it out.

His other arm shifted and his claws pressed against Raika’s midriff. “Advance one step and I’ll rip her to pieces before you can shift.”

“This is insane,” Raika muttered. “Roman, you don’t want to do this.”

“No, I don’t, but what other choice do I have?” He took a step back, into the kitchen, putting more distance between us. My body thrummed with the need to shift and pounce at him. “You’re mated to him. I lost.”

“Just … let me go and we can talk,” Raika rasped. “We can—”

“Shut up!” he yelled.

I looked at Raika. My mate was in the arms of the wolf who betrayed his pack, who helped a higher demon take her away from us, who was aiding this demon and his ridiculous plans of taking back the underworld—all because he wanted to be with a woman who was mated to another.

Fury became a white-hot sea and I couldn’t control it anymore.

The Shadow Wolf surged forward.
