Flicking the lock on the door, he turns back to me.

“Um, what’re you doing?” I ask, nervous.

Alex takes a step towards me, and I take one back. “So, you live here now.” He says it as a statement, and my throat closes a little, so I just nod yes in response. “Why?” he asks, taking another step forward. I go to take one back, but I’m already up against the counter, so I’m forced to stand my ground.

Swallowing hard, I blink, trying to break the spell his eyes cast over me. “I moved here for me.”

“You did?”

“Yeah,” I say, clearing my throat. “I talked to Dr. Taylor at the wedding, and he told me when I was ready, he’d help me find a job. I didn’t know it’d be with him, but I’m glad it is.”

He tilts his head to the side, studying me. “You are?”

“Yeah. Ally and Ash are here. So, if you’re thinking I came here because of you, you’re sadly mistaken. I’m not crazy.” Wow, subtle Mel, subtle. If I could slap myself right now andnotlook crazy, I would.

Smiling wickedly, Alex takes another step towards me so we’re only a foot away from each other. The faint smell of cigarettes and a spicy cologne fills my nose, and I find myself breathing deeper, wanting more.

“I never said you were crazy.”

“No, but don’t lie. For a second, you thought it was you. You can’t help it.”

“Help what?”

“Thinking all women want you at any cost. Like moving hundreds of miles because you flashed your green eyes at her and threw some cheesy pick-up lines her way.”

Laughing, he throws his head back, the sound echoing off the tiles and reverberating back into my ears. A deep, throaty laugh that sends a chill through me.

“I don’t think that.”

Smiling, I give him a challenging look. “Don’t you? Based on how you flirt with every woman you talk to, I think you do.”

“It’s how I get tips.”

A burst of laughter is forced from my lips. “I doubt that’s your reasoning. But I’ll let you have this one.”

“How kind of you,” he says, his voice dropping an octave as he takes another step closer.

“What’re you doing?” I ask, sounding a little panicked.

“I think it’s pretty obvious.”

“Shouldn’t you be working?”

He shakes his head no. “I’m covered out there.”

“Oh,” I whisper, looking up at him. This close, I can see the flecks of gold in the sea of green. And the longer I stare, the more the gold and green start to swirl as one, and I begin to feel like I’m being swallowed up whole.

With only an inch between us now, the heat from his body radiates into me, filling me, making my head spin as the scent of smoke fills my nostrils even more.

What’s happening?

“Alex,” I whisper, placing a hand on his chest so he can’t lean any closer.

“Mel,” he whispers back, a small smile playing on his lips.

Lips that have probably kissed hundreds of women.

“Stop.”
