“You’re lying, but that’s okay. I’ll get it out of you soon enough.”

“Oh, really? Will you get me drunk and then leave me here alone like you did last week?”

“What?”

“Yeah, uh, Courtney, we all kind of left Mel here last weekend.”

“No, we didn’t,” she balks, then looks at me with wide eyes. “Did we?”

“Yes.”

“Shit. I’m so sorry!”

“It’s okay,” I tell her. “Things worked out fine.”

“Yeah,” Ash says. “She spent the night with Alex.”

“WHAT?!” Courtney shrieks. “How was it?” she asks right after, leaning forward on the table, her chin propped up on her hands.

“We didn’t do anything but sleep.”

“Why not?”

“Because I was exhausted and passed out the second my head hit the pillows.”

“But if you weren’t, then you would have?”

“What? No, I didn’t say that.”

“It was implied.”

“If I wasn’t drunk and tired then I wouldn’t have been there in the first place. He would have just taken me home that same night.”

“Oohh, how did you like riding behind him? I’ve always wanted to do that.” I raise my eyebrows at her, and she quickly stammers to say, “Not with Alex. I just meant being behind a man on a motorcycle – squeezing him tight, feeling the rumble beneath us. Mmm, that’d be so hot.”

“Wow, Courtney, I think you need to get laid by your husband,” Ash says. “How long has it been?”

“Less than a day,” she sighs. “But still.”

“I’m surrounded by a bunch of sex crazed women,” I mutter, finishing off my glass of wine.

“Don’t worry, Mely, you’ll become just as sex crazed. I’ll bet you a week’s worth of coffee and pastries that he’ll have you in his bed for a week straight the second you give in to him.”

“Um, excuse me, he needs to earn seeing me naked and getting a piece of what I got under my scrubs.”

Laughing, they all look over at Alex, and he’s already looking at us–well, me actually–like he knows we’re talking about him. He’s giving me that little smirk of his that I want to feel against my skin as he kisses his way down my neck.

Biting my lower lip, I can’t hold back the smile that tugs at my mouth. Why is he so good at making me forget that I shouldn’t want him?

“Mel, go get us more drinks,” Ash orders, making me break my eye contact with Alex.

“Huh?”

Smiling, she repeats, “Go get us more drinks. And make sure he keeps giving them to us for free.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” I laugh, standing up. Nervous, I make my way up to the bar, and Alex watches me as I weave through the crowd. He’s pouring drinks for the two guys in front of him, but that doesn’t stop him from watching me and narrowing his eyes at the people who bump into me.

“Back for more already, gorgeous?” he asks when I reach him.
