“Why are you here?” I ask, giving him my best glare. I don’t know why, but I need to be angry with him. I need to push him away, or else I’ll end up pulling him closer.

His eyes take me in from head to toe, and a shiver runs through me at his inspection, making me feel naked.

“You just ran off.”

“And that means you should come to my house in the middle of the night?”

“I didn’t know when I’d see you again.”

“What?”

“I just want to talk.” Is he serious?

“About what?”

“Can I come in?”

“Alex, no. Why are you here?”

He takes a step closer, and my grip on the doorknob tightens, needing to stand my ground.

“I didn’t like seeing another man flirting with you.” My eyes narrow, and he continues. “I don’t know why, okay? I fucking hate that it made me mad, and I don’t know why.”

“You drove all the way here to tell me that?”

“Yes, because I couldn’t stop thinking about what a dick I was, and the look on your face. I don’t want to be someone that makes you look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like every other person does. Like you’re disgusted by who I am,” he admits somberly, and I start to see a crack in his bravado armor.

Was I looking at him like that?

“I don’t know why I reacted like that,” he continues, “but there’s something about you that’s making me crazy, Mel. And I just… I’m not used to this.”

His eyes are almost pleading with me to let him off the hook, and to just say I forgive him so he doesn’t have to talk about this anymore. But I can’t.

“I’m not disgusted by you, Alex,” I whisper. “I just don’t want to be one of the many.”

“I get that.” He nods. “But I don’t want you to be either.”

“I know you tried to get with Ally and Ash when they first got here. Am I just the next in line?”

“No, you’re definitely not,” he says, running his hand through his hair, his eyes penetrating mine. “I don’t really know how to do this. But I want to try.”

“Try what?” I need him to be clear. I need him to say the words.

“This. Us.” His eyes hold mine, and with the way he’s looking at me, I want to believe him.

Stepping aside, I let him in, and then cross my arms over my chest, suddenly aware of my lack of bra and the fact that I’m just in a tank top, the blanket having fell from my shoulders when I opened the door.

“Are you hungry?” I ask, nodding at the pizza on the table.

“I could eat. Thanks.” Taking his leather jacket off, he sits on the couch and then looks up at me. I’m just standing here, not moving. “Are you going to sit?”

“Do you want something to drink?” I’m not ready to sit next to him yet. I already took my makeup offandI’m in my pajamas. I feel like he has the upper hand.

“Water’s fine.”
