“Good. Talk to you soon.”

“Bye, thank you.”

Hanging up, I lean back and rest my head on the back of the couch.

I can’t believe I just did that. I actually, finally, called Dr. Taylor.

Oh my god. Wait. What? I didn’t think this through. I just took a job in Pine Cove.

That’s six hours, and hundreds of miles away.

In Maine.

Oh my god.

Sighing, I close my eyes and wait for my pulse to return to normal.

I’m upending the carefully orchestrated life I’ve built for myself since I started college, and moving to a small town in Maine. A town that I fell in love with last summer, but still, this is huge.

Just breathe, Mel. You can do this. Youneedto do this. Remember, this is what you want.

Giving myself a little pep talk, I turn the TV off and head to bed, ready to take on tomorrow for the first time in I don’t know how long.

I’m actually looking forward to waking up and writing out my formal two-week notice. And even more so, I’m looking forward to handing it to my boss.

I don’t remember the last time I was excited to go to work. And it’s sad that it’s only because I know there’s an expiration date to my time there now.

Getting home from work, I actually have a smile on my face, and enough energy to bound up to my apartment without dragging my feet.

After a quick shower, I settle in on the couch and call Ally.

“Hey, Mel!” she greets excitedly.

“Hey, Ally-cat, how are you?”

“I’m good. I spent the day painting out on the dock. I’m still in honeymoon mode,” she sighs, sounding happy. “What’s up with you?”

“Oh, well, I’m calling with some big news. I, uh, spoke to Dr. Taylor at your wedding, and I called him last night…”

“Really? About what?”

“A job.”

“Wait. Mel. What? A job? Like, here? In Pine Cove?”

“Yes.” I laugh, loving her confusion.

“Are you serious? When did you decide this?”

“You know I’ve been needing a change for a long time now. And then last summer I saw how happy, relaxed, and at peace you were in your new life, and how making such a drastic change brought you the greatest adventure of all. I need that. I can’t keep going on the way I have been.

“And then at your wedding, Dr. Taylor and I were talking, and he said he could help me find a job, if and when I was ready to make a move. He meant in one of the surrounding towns, but when I called him last night, he said his one nurse is going on maternity leave in a week and he’s not sure if she’ll be returning.”

“Oh, Linda, yeah. She’s about ready to pop. She comes into the café a lot, craving pastries.”

“Mmm, Courtney’s pastries,” I hum, remembering how delicious they are. “I’ll be stopping there first.”
