I need a change. I need excitement. I needsomething.

It’s eight o’clock now, should I call him? Should I wait for the morning? He’ll probably be at work in the morning, and I don’t want to bother him when he has patients.

Oh my god, why am I debating this so much? I need to just stop questioning it, and do it.

Picking up my phone, I dial the number on his card, and hold it up to my ear with a trembling hand.

He answers almost immediately. “Dr. Taylor, how can I help you?”

“Hi, Dr. Taylor, this is Melanie. Ally’s friend?”

“Oh, of course, yes dear, how are you?” he asks in a warm, booming voice. Wow, he’s in a good mood for probably having worked all day.

“I’m good, thank you. Tired, but good,” I say, taking a deep breath. “I was just calling because I’ve been thinking a lot about what we talked about at the wedding.”

“Are you ready to make a change? Listen to your soul?”

“I am,” I breathe out, relieved that he remembers.

“Well then, young lady, I have some good news for you.”

“You do?”

“Yes. I didn’t realize you’d be calling so soon, and so if you’d like, I can offer you a position with me at my practice in town.”

“Really? You have a nurse opening?”

“I do, actually. My full-time weekday nurse is going on maternity leave in a week, and she’s not sure if she’ll return afterwards. She wants to be a full-time mom.”

“Oh, wow, that’s great.”

“I’ve been interviewing, but no one has felt like a good fit. And I know you’ll be perfect.”

“Wow, thank you so much Dr. Taylor. I really appreciate this.”

“Oh, please, call me Dave,” he says, and I hear the smile in his voice.

“Alright, thank you, Dave.” I smile to myself. “I can give my two weeks at the hospital as soon as tomorrow.”

“If you’re sure, dear. This is a big move.”

“I’ve never been surer of anything.” And when I say it, I actually believe it. “This is what I need.”

“I know what you mean. That’s how I ended up here many decades ago.” He laughs. “Now, we can settle the finer details in a few days if you’d like?”

“Sounds good. I’ve been staring at your business card every day, and finally worked up the courage to call you tonight.”

“I’m glad you did. I’ll call you in a few days then, Melanie. I want to help out in any way that I can with the transition. Housing, moving, anything you need.”

“Thanks, that’s so nice of you. But I think I’ll give Dottie a call tomorrow about renting her cottage. I talked to her at the wedding, too.”

“I guess that night changed your life as well.” He laughs. “Not just Ally and my boy’s.”

“I guess so.” I chuckle.

“Alright, I’ll let you go, dear. Enjoy the rest of your night.”

“Thank you. I think I really can enjoy it now.”
