“Of course, yes. I want to catch up with all of my girls. But have them come a little later so we can talk ourselves first.” I hear a hint of mischief in her voice like she knows something is up with me. But how could she?

“Alright,” I agree.

“Good. So, I’ll see you Sunday, at say, noon?”

“Sounds perfect.” I can’t help but smile as I walk, because for some reason, making plans with Dottie has made my chest lighter and my mind feel a little less crazy.

Ally might be on to something with her possessing some kind of old lady powers.

“Alright then, bye dearie.”

“Bye, Dottie.” Hanging up, I shoot a text to Ally and Ash to let them know about Sunday, and slip my phone back in my pocket.

Tilting my face up to the sun as I make my way back to the office, I feel better than I did a few minutes ago.

I told Alex that I needed Sunday for the girls, and he pouted. He literally pouted, and then proceeded to kiss me in hopes that I’d change my mind. And I almost did. But then I had to shake myself from the cloudiness he seems to put me under, and I told him to leave so I could clean up before Dottie got here.

I’ve spent every night since our date on Monday with him, and it’s been night after night of mind-blowing sex followed by the best sleep I’ve ever gotten.

Being in his arms, I’m shrouded in warmth and security, and it’s something I’ve wanted my whole life. And even though I feel a twinge of guilt that I practically pushed him out the door this morning, I know I need this.

Frantically, I clean up around the house and then open the windows for a half hour to let in the fresh, salty sea air.

The temperature has been dropping with each passing day, and the pretty colorful leaves are slowly floating to the ground and turning brown.

Fall in Maine is beautiful. It’s a bright and cheerful time before the harsh cold of winter sets in.

I’m not a huge fan of the weather dropping below freezing and then not rising above it for a few months, but hey, I’ll adjust. As long as I have Alex warming me every night, then I’ll be good.

Ugh, this is why I need today.

I have to stop getting my hopes up. As much as I’m enjoying myself, it also feels like I’m just biding time until the other shoe drops. Like this is all too good to be true.

He’s going to get bored of me like all his other women, and then I’ll be left to pick myself up and act like nothing happened. Which I already know I’ll never be able to do.

Alex hasn’t given me any indication that he’s done with me, quite the opposite actually. He acts like he can’t get enough of me, but I need to keep myself prepared for it.

A knock at the door pulls me from my everlasting battle, and I look at the clock, not even realizing it was already noon.

Opening the door to a smiling Dottie, I step aside, and she sweeps in with all the energy of a woman half her age. Which is saying a lot.

“Hi, dearie,” she greets, shuffling down the hall to the kitchen. Catching up with her, I take the bag from her hand as she places the pie she has in the other on the counter.

“I’m so excited to try your famous blueberry pie. Ally is always raving about it.”

“Yes, well, she needed it to get that man of hers.” She smiles, a twinkle in her eyes. “And my pie always works.”

“It certainly did with her and Jake.” I laugh.

“But you don’t need it, dear, do you?” My eyes widen at her knowing smile, and I quickly try and hide my surprise, but she just shakes her head and waves her hand in the air. “I know all, dear.”

“What?” Coughing, I try and clear my closing throat, but it doesn’t work.

Going over to the fridge, I grab a bottle of water and down a third of it before turning back to her.

“Come, let’s make tea and then we’ll sit and talk out on the porch.”
