An hour later, I’m biting into one of the blueberry with lemon glaze donuts, and moan. “Oh my god.”

“I know.” Courtney smiles. “Try the maple bacon now.”

“Gladly.” Grabbing one of them with my other free hand, I bite into it and moan again, closing my eyes. “So good.”

“I make everything myself, and I’m getting burned out,” she admits. “I need a partner. I already have the breads, bagels, and croissants delivered fresh each morning by a bakery a couple of towns over, but it’s still a lot. I rarely get days off, and I don’t remember the last time I slept in. I want a day in bed with my man without worrying about the café.”

“I get that,” I tell her.

“I know you don’t have ‘formal’ training, but I don’t care. I don’t serve the fancy stuff anyway. I make what I know people love, and I do it well. And based on your cupcakes, and these donuts, I know you do too.”

“Thank you,” I say sincerely. “Truly. I’d love to partner with you. And working with you and Ally would be a dream, too. I don’t know if I could start out on my own and do everything by myself like you did.”

“It was really hard. Still is. And I want to expand the menu as well. I’ve been wanting to start a breakfast and lunch menu of sandwiches and such for the longest time, and now I can finally do that if I have a partner to help with the baking.”

“Glad to be of service,” I tell her, and we share a laugh.

“Hi, guys,” Ally greets, poking her head into the kitchen.

“Hey, Al.”

“Ellie, it seems you have a visitor.” She smirks.

Biting back a smile, I wipe my hands on my apron and touch the bun on top of my head to make sure it’s still in place before walking out to the front.

Oh, he looks good.

Tyler is waiting for me with a smile, leaning against the counter in his fire department t-shirt and navy work pants.

“Hey, sugar,” he says, his voice warming my blood.

“Hi.”

“I like your apron.” He smirks, eyeing my chest. “I like big buns, too.” He winks. “Cinnamon, of course,” he adds, his smile growing.

“Mhmm, sure.” I smile. “Here you go,” I say, handing him one of my cupcakes from the case. “You came earlier than I expected.”

“I couldn’t wait,” he says, and my heart flutters, watching him take a bite right there in front of me.

His reaction mirrors Courtney’s, only his is way sexier and turns me on instantly, my cheeks feeling hot when his low, throaty moan fills my ears.

Oh, Lord.

“Damn, baby, this is like heaven in my mouth,” he groans, my skin flushing further.

Clearing my throat, I nervously play with the tie of my apron. “Thanks.”

“No, seriously. No offense to Courtney, but this is the best cupcake I’ve ever had.”

“Thanks,” I repeat, his praise filling me with immense pride.

“Can I have another for later?”

“Sure.” I laugh, placing two more in a bag for him.

“Thanks, sugar. When are you free for our ‘non date’? I was thinking tomorrow at seven.”

“Oh, um, I don’t know.” I smooth my hands down the front of my apron. I wasn’t expecting him to ask me so soon.
