“Where are you staying?” he asks, genuinely concerned.

“At the Inn for a couple nights, and then Mel said I can stay at Alex’s place after that. I don’t know for how long, though.”

“Alex’s apartment above The Rusty Anchor?”

“Yeah, why? Is there something wrong with that?”

He rubs his jaw. “No. Nothing.”

“Really?” I smile. “Sounds like you have a problem with it.”

“It gets loud, I’d assume. You’re right above the place. And there’s lots of drunk men, especially on the weekends.”

“Oh, I see.” I laugh. “You’re trying to make an impression, and you’re worried another man might beat you to it.”

“No, I–”

“I’ll just stop you there,” I say, looking up at him. “I’m here because of a bad breakup, so I’m not looking for anything if that’s your end game.”

“Someone was dumb enough to mess up with you?”

“Yeah,” I scoff. “You could say that.” I finish off my glass of wine and Tyler takes it for me, placing it on the high-top table next to us. “Thank you.”

“No problem.” We study the painting in front of us, and I’m momentarily lost in the sailboats bobbing in the ocean when Tyler casually says, “So, I think I should take you out.”

“Do you now?”

“Yes.”

“I just told you I wasn’t interested in anything right now.”

“I heard you.” He smirks. “All I’m proposing is a fun night out. Nothing more. We’ll eat, drink, laugh, and then I’ll drive you home.”

That actually sounds nice, considering the entire time I’ve been talking to him, I haven’t stopped smiling. But…

“I’ll think about it. I haven’t even been single for 24 hours, so I need a little time.”

“Alright, it’s not a no, so I’ll take it.” He smiles, looking at his watch. “And I think my five minutes were up five minutes ago, so I’ll let you get back to the pack of women who’ve turned this town upside down.”

“What?”

“Ally, Ashley, and Melanie have one-by-one come up here and staked their claim on two of my brothers who I never thought would settle down, as well as the town’s playboy.”

“Is that a problem?”

“No, I’m just curious.” He smiles.

“About?”

“I want to know what it is about you women.”

“Huh.” I smirk. “Good luck with that.”

“Challenge accepted.”

“It wasn’t a challenge, Tyler.”

“It was to me. See you around, Ellie.” Smiling, he walks back over to his brothers, Jake and Ryan, and Courtney’s husband, Jack, who’s also a firefighter in town like Tyler.
