By mid-January, I could seriously retire. I laugh quietly. It’s so funny. It’s also serious.

No one in my family has had that kind of money.

The thing is… I like to work. And I’d love to make more money. Investing. Yes. That’s one way to double my money, but there is other stuff I like to do.

This is only the beginning, and it’s fascinating how well Kai had read me before making that proposal. Having me learn how to invest my money? Did he know I’d love it so much? Did he know I’d turn into a hustler?

He probably did.

I think the thought turned him on. Like that night I spent on Cardenas’ yacht.

I laugh quietly again.

I’ll be the first to admit he has particular tastes in women. He made sure I explored that part of myself and discovered it on my own.

My smile fades.

I wait until I no longer hear their voices before I crack the door open, peer inside, check the empty office, and saunter out.

Kai’s things are gone.

I walk across his office and enter the corridor. The floor is mostly empty, and most of the cubicles are dimly lit.

Most people collect their things and put their coats on, ready to go home.

The evening has crept in, and it’s already dark outside, despite being five o’clock.

It snows, and it must be cold, and I suddenly feel nostalgic as I look out the window.

This thing with Kai sort of left me bereft. I wish I had plans for tonight. I assumed I’d see him. And it was a big fucking mistake.

I’m a bit pissed as I enter my office and tidy up my desk. My gaze is tipped down when I hear footsteps, and before I have the chance to look up, a voice thunders from across the room.

“Your life with my son is not my business, but turning him against me is.”

The blood drains out of my body.

I push my gaze up to meet Robert Walker’s piercing eyes.

He’s scary on a good day, let alone when he’s fuming. His accusation makes my heart skips beats.

At first, I’m tempted to defend myself, when I quickly realize that’s what he wants.

Still…

“Excuse me?”

I straighten, holding his gaze and thinking fast.

He knew I was in Kai’s office.

He must’ve seen me walk out. Besides, he had found the door to his son’s office locked. Hence his prickly comment.

My cheeks get flushed.

But his accusation? Where did he get that from?

He wears a charcoal gray pinstripe suit with a white shirt, and a blue tie, silver hair gracing his temples.
