Misha and Rei exchange a look. I don’t care about what they’re thinking, but I’m about to say it was a bad idea when Trine flashes me a warm smile. “Would you two mind?“ she asks. “I expect that there are going to be things in her notes I don’t want to see, and…“

“We can filter those for you,“ Rei says. “Of course we can do that.“

“And we wouldn’t want Father Salinas’ innocent eyes besmirched by dirty material,“ Misha adds, a smile in his voice. “I think this is probably smart.”

I don’t. The moment they all agreed, it started to seem more like a bad idea. I don’t think that the two of us being alone is going to lead to anything good. Misha throws me the keys to the car. “We won’t be long,“ I say.

“Take your time,“ Misha replies. “We still need to get a lot of background on Aura. However long you need, okay, Trine?“

She nods, a grateful smile on her face. “Thank you,“ she says softly.

They go into the house before we get in the car. “Do you want to drive?“ I ask her.

She smiles at me. “What?“

“I just thought it might be nice for you to be actively doing something if you don’t want to think about your conversation with your mom,“ I say. “Plus, that way, you can decide where we’re going to go.“

A glint appears in her eyes as she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “What makes you think I’m not going to take us somewhere scandalous?“

“You?“ I ask in mock surprise. “Taking us somewhere scandalous? I don’t see it happening.“

She laughs. I hand her the keys, our fingers touching for a split second. It’s enough to send a jolt of electricity up my spine. She notices it, too. She looks up at me, her eyes narrowing when she does, her mouth falling open. I can see the ridges of her crimson lips, the space between her curled eyelashes, the way her brows arch over her delicate face.

I’ve never wanted to kiss anyone as much as I want to kiss Trine.

She cocks her head, her gaze still holding me steady in place. I watch her jaw tense as she swallows. “Do we need to talk?“

“No,“ I say, too quickly. “There’s nothing to talk about.“

She shrugs, clicking the lock open as she does. “Okay.“

She gets in the car and I walk around, biting my tongue, wondering if I should’ve said something about it at all. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not helpful to dwell on it. There’s no way that we’re going to come to any solutions because this is an impossible situation.

Trine backs out of the driveway as I fiddle with the radio. I’m not going to ask her where we’re going, especially when she looks at me and flashes me a smile, wavy hair framing her face.

When she pulls out on the street, she finally turns to look at me. “You’re not going to ask me where we’re going?“

“Nah. I trust you.“

She laughs, winking at me. “Are you sure that’s a good idea, Father?“

“No,“ I say. “But I still do.“

LUKE

She drives to a small area in the middle of the city. It’s a main street intersection with a surprising amount of activity for such a small town. I see people milling around on the street, some of them waving at us.

Trine parallel parks in one of the spots near one of the quaint restaurants toward the end of the street. “Here,“ she says, tilting her face toward a small, unassuming door with a red and green frame.

“What is it?“ I ask.

“The best ice cream I’ve ever had,“ she says. “Sinfully good.“

“I find that hard to believe, considering where you live,“ I say.

“Right? Me too,“ she says. She kills the engine, unclicking her seatbelt when she does. “And yet I’ve looked very hard and this is the best I got. You should be thanking me.“

I smile at her.
