“She did just say he was cute,” Dax offered, garnering a dark look from Brielle. He flinched, holding up his hands.
“Aren’t you supposed to be the next one to get married?” Sarah lowered her voice so no one would overhear. “What are you going to do?”
A snort escaped Brielle again. “Me? Nothing. I don’t have to do a dang thing. If Constance wants to fall in love, that’s on her.”
“But your dad—” Sarah started.
“My dad is stuck in the stone age. He’s going to have to admit that his daughters are all growing up and we are allowed to fall in love.” Brielle threw her hands down at her sides and stormed off without another word.
Sarah turned a concerned gaze on Dax. “What do you think that is about?”
He put his arm around her and pulled her close, pressing a kiss to her temple as they watched Brielle storm off. “I think it might have something to do with the fact that she doesn’t want anything to do with getting married, but she knows she’s going to have to do something or her sisters are going to struggle.”
“She’s right, you know.” Sarah leaned against him. “Zeke is going to have to come to terms with his daughters growing up. My mom had to. If Constance wants to date the doctor, then no one can stop her. I don’t see Zeke being the kind of father to kick her to the curb.”
“No, I don’t suppose he would. But I’d bet that Brielle is going to need our support. If Constance and Dr. Pratt start seeing each other, she’s going to feel a lot more pressure.”
“Brielle isn’t going to settle for someone she’s not head-over-heels in love with. And she’s not the type to be bullied into anything.”
He chuckled. “You’re right about that.” He turned to face her. “Now, what do you say we take Cricket for a ride? I think the two of you need to get reacquainted, especially if you’re going to get good enough to open your own horse training program.”
Warmth spread all throughout her whole body and she beamed at him. “You mean ifweare going to open upourown horse training program.”
