Chapter Twenty-One

Meghan

“I did a thing.” My words are barely a whisper as I pin my cell phone between my cheek and shoulder, my hands twisting the engagement ring on my hand. I’m hiding in Nick’s bathroom, pretending to shower.

“Is that what we’re calling it? A thing?” my sister AJ retorts on the other end.

“No, silly, I definitely did that thing. Three times, actually.”

She’s silent on the other end of the line for several long seconds before she finally woops with excitement. “Atta girl! Three times?”

“Yes, three amazing, perfect times. But that’s not what I called about,” I say, gripping my towel around my chest.

“What other thing did you do? Because if it were up to me, I’d say forget that thing and go back into the bedroom and do the other thing.”

“Okay, stop saying thing. It’s getting weird,” I tell her, glancing at my reflection in the mirror. I look a bit tired, but thoroughly screwed. (In the good way.) My hair is mussed into a horrible rat’s nest, my lips are swollen and pink, and my cheeks have that freshly fucked glow.

“Well, tell me what you did,” she encourages through the phone.

“I invited him to breakfast at Payton’s. With the family. All of them.”

There’s a pause. “Okay, I don’t understand. You invited him to come eat with us. That’s a bad thing? Wait, hasn’t he been there before?”

“Well, yes, actually he has, but that was before we had sex three times and I let him do dirty things to me with his tongue,” I growl at my sister.

“Really? Tell me more about these magical tongue things he did,” she encourages.

“You’re incorrigible, Grandma. Can we focus on the problem at hand?” I huff, pacing the small bathroom.

“I don’t see the problem at all,” AJ replies. “You were friends before. Now, you’re friends who have seen each other naked. What’s the big deal?”

“You should see me, Alison. I look like I was up all night having sex! I can’t go to breakfast like this. Grandma is like a dog with a bone when it comes to anything sexual. You don’t think she’ll smell him on my skin, even after I’ve showered?”

“Good point. She’ll definitely know.”

“So that’s it? She’ll know. That’s the best you’ve got for me?” I ask, my mouth gaping open as realization sets in. There’s no getting out of this.

“That’s it, sunshine. But don’t worry, I’ll have that freshly fucked glow myself, so maybe she’ll focus on me rather than you,” AJ offers, laughing.

“That’ll never happen. You and the hot baseball player have been going at it like bunnies for a while now. You’re old news.”

“And you’ll be the front page headline! I’m so excited for you!”

Grumbling, I reply, “Yeah, thanks. Anyway, if you could create a diversion when she starts to ask questions about why I’m all rosy and smell like a man, that’d be great.”

AJ laughs. “A diversion? Like what?”

“I don’t know. Announce you’re pregnant or something?”

“Ain’t happening,” she says, with a hint of a smile in her voice. “Not because we aren’t practicing, but because we’re not ready for that yet. We both want kids, but we’d at least like to get down the aisle first.”

“Then come up with something else. I’m counting on you, Alison Jane. Don’t let me down.”

“Fine,” she sighs. “When Grandma starts asking why you look like you had the sex all night long, and why Nick has that thoroughly sexed grin on his face, I’ll create a diversion.”

“Thank you,” I say, breathing a sigh of relief.

“You owe me.”
